Hey everyone. I got a set of larger tires a while ago and its finally annoyed me enough to fix how far out the speedo is. The tires are 235/75 15's. The speedo is slow by about 6 at 60km/h and about 10 at 100km/h and the trip meter is close to 35km under by the time my tank is empty according to the gps. I dont really want to pay the hundreds that instrument shops charge and was wondering how hard it is as a DIY and what you need in terms of gear size. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

x2 it's the easiest way. Or just learn what rev's you do it each speed intival.

The instrument guys charge about the same as a speeding fine, but they dont take points away.

Wind, hills, type of road, what gear. All things that would affect that idea.

As its down by roughly 10% it would be easy just to add on the defficiency. Ie for 60kmh go 66kmh on the speedo or for 100kmh go 110kmh on the speedo IMO.

i should be putting my 30s on on wednesday! im still not sure what im going to do about this problem but the top to options on my list are!

option one is this permanantly mounted were the clock and storage hole used to be

the nav man one makes a lil noise when u hit the speed limit aswell. and tell u were red light cameras are (and saftey cams)

and option two is this mounted in that little space on the right hand side between the steering wheel and the drivers side window!

A 1L speedo drive gear will reset it back to stock. Not the whole tcase, just the drive gear.

only gear will have any effect there

I know my speedo is 8% out, I just guess its not that hard

i have a gps at the moment to say speed its more that my trip meter is so far out combining larger tires and long range tank. one place quoted $660 just for the new speedo gear box, stuff that. i would like to know where you could get a speedo gearbox kit and do it yourself

dunno if this is much help- years ago we used to swap tyres/ diffs etc in our pommy fords and it really messed up the speedo.
we would pull out the speedo drive cog from the gearbox and just swap it for another one with less/ more teeth until we found the right one.
(different coloured nylon cogs for different numbers of teeth)
my capri was around a 2 minute job to change the cog.
escort, capri, cortina, consul, transit, zephyr, zodiac all were interchangable with cogs- and many other cars as well.
no GPS then- you either drove alongside your mates, asked a copper with a radar gun, or used the RAC rolling road or a dyno.

It might be possible that the speedo drive cog from another vehicle will fix your problem.
someone out there in Auszookland might have a pile of broken gearboxes(or transfercases) that the cogs can be salvaged from- or zookers can post if they have any they salvage for use by other members (if it is feasable or possible to swap cogs in zooks? )

that sounds like a plausible idea. So if i try and follow my speedo cable down to my gear box or transfer case it should be attached to a small plastic gear that i can replace yeah?

thats pretty much how it was for us, on pommy fords you just disconnected the cable from the gearbox (IIRC 1 bolt holding a forked clamp), and then just pulled the cog out of the gearbox with a pair of pliers- then pushing the replacement cog in its place (usually having to replace the old decrepit dodgy "O" ring)
Then refitting the cable and its clamp and bolt.

many of the ford gearboxes of that era were borg-warner, and some parts were also similar from other car manufacturers.

with a bit of luck, Suzuki might have followed the same principal.

With those figures, simple maths tells us that you are 10% out and thus need a 10% overdrive to the speedo unit.

This could be achieved with a 11/10T gear set for example.

If you aren't interested too much in the odometer accuracy:-

I am currently in the process of designing some new speedo faces for one of the N Brisbane Zook club members - the idea being you take the cluster apart (really simple) and replace the old faces with a new one with a new scale. I intend to do some dual-scale designs also. I am working on a 1L design at the moment with the prototype waiting to be made. I intend to make some NT/WT ones also, but this will take a few weeks to experiment with the material and getting the transparency right.
