There's a doer upperer Mini Moke around the corner from home, and it's got me wondering if one day I could part out the Sierra to make a, umm, Sumoki I've always wanted a Moke, but not a British 4 speed and 1 litre... a Japanese 1.6L 5 speed is more my style.

I've seen a Moke with a G13 poked inside, so I know that's possible - would it be possible to slot my G16A into the same hole? I don't know much about the Suzuki FWD trans/axle options, is there anything that could get the power of the 1.6 to the ground (to be a reliable daily runner), yet still fit under the bonnet?

I know there's a 1000 other things to consider (like subframe mods and track width limits), but that's what engineers are for... a this stage i'm just wondering if a reliable G16 powered Moke is possible?

It has been done before, with Minis and Mokes.
A quick search on mini body on suzuki chassis found lots of info.

I had a moke for 25 years,
often thought about a 4wd conversion.

But east west engine 4wd was rare,
now they are everywhere.

I'd like to see it done

i'd question whether ruining a factory moke is a good idea... theyre pretty rare... although your thinking is good =) haha

there was a pic on google a few years ago of a mini body on a sierra chassis... looked like a mini monster truck. it had a 1.6carby engine and everything else was factory sierra, would have gone bloody quick!

yeah a G whatever engine will fit under the bonnet, the extra height of a G16 should be ok in a moke

but

its a shitfight precision job to make it all fit in and don't even think about it being easy to work on or remotely reliable (there is a shitload of stuff to break down on a mini bar the engine) and seriously unless you have some pretty shit hot fabricators, welders, electricians, free steel suppliers etc available to work on it for free youll spend more money on it than a new Swift, and youll still have a noisy bumpy rusty easy to steal car to drive around in

At the time I was considering a Fiat Panda transplant, an east west 4wd.
A rare thing once.

The moke in that picture is welded to a zook floor pan, and extended bonnet about 200 - 300mm

That car is out of this world!!! haha

So what would be the weak point of this install? If the motor and trans/axle are Suzuki - shouldn't that eliminate a good bunch of problems? I'm assuming I can bolt on some sort of Swift GTi FWD system... I just don't know if it'd be strong enough to cope. Was there ever a 1.6 G-series Swift?


As for the other hurdles - my new job will see me hanging out with welders and fabricators all day, every day, so that's easy enough to solve (half of em are family), i'd be happy to plug away at the electrics myself, and off-shore work pays OK so that'll grease the wheel a little to get it done.


I won't put this in the too hard basket just yet - i'll just put it in my 'yet another crazy idea pile'

My new import G16A motor is from a 4wd Swift. Transverse mounted,
It is EFI though, which a lot of A's were not

Ever thought of a 1.6ltr baleno motor? It's originally east west and has plenty of poke for a moke!

I have seen one of the quickest hill climb cars around and it has a GTI motor in it, the bloke that owns it said it was an easy conversion

Conversions as opposed to bolting Moke body to a Zook chassis,
run into a problem.
That being that a Mini/Moke engine sits atop its gearbox/diff as a complete unit.
Whereas modern east/west engines usually have gearbox on the side.
So shoe horning in could be a problem

Somehow the cooper's body doesn't look good at all, but the Moke does. Probably because of the squarer box style of it.

Only a brief appearance standing in the river crossings spotting.
Was hard to recognise myself with a beard, hair and not grey

The Mokes were well built for it,
couldn't get mine ready in time,
so I got a ride with a mate.

Another way to build a 4x4 Moke is to install a second engine in the rear.
