Finally got around to doing a service on the zook, just an oil & filter change. I cracked open the air filter housing to check that too, and was a bit stunned to find...

That the filter was a bit holey!!!

amd the element itself has just fallen to bits

Here's what's left of the filter material in the bottom of the air cleaner housing

Rubbish had covered the throttle plate too. By the looks of the black foam missing in the first pic, my engine ate a lot of filter!!! 8O

Air flow meter was chocked up too

Granted the filter was a few years old now, but I thought these things were supposed to be "the last filter you ever buy".

I have only used the proper cleaner and oil for it. I'm thinking the previous owner may have gone the dodge though.

In any case, it's rooted now.

Was a finer filter in mine when I bought the car too, and it looked just like that one. I'm not a real big fan of air filters that need to be oiled, so I replaced it with a stocko paper one.

That's probably the cause of your idle issue too Damo. What are you going to clean the throttle body and intake with? I used an awesome product from Three Bond to clean my carby the other day, it's sooo shiney inside now!! It's called Engine Conditioner.

luckily its only foam and shouldnt cause too much damage.

how long was it in between servicing it?

i run a finer filter in my 1.3 & check it every 5000klm & service it ie: wash & oil filter once a year . no problems for about 5 years. basically you need to check regularly damo. 8)

You're right. It won't do any damage to the engine, but I'm not so sure about the air flow meter. I would be using carby cleaner to clean out the throttle body, and maybe a light blow out with compressed air through the air flow meter to get all the crap out. If it does have a problem with idle as already stated, I'd be pointing the finger at the air flow meter.

I'd use AFM Cleaner on the AFM. WHilst a light blow may get the large crap out, it probably won't get rid of any oily residue which can make the meter play up and not work properly.

Then throw it all away and get a paper filter.

Called around and got prices for paper filters. Was a bit 8O at some of the prices!!! Most had to order in as well.

Thanks to Lance from Qld 4WD, who had one on the shelf for $22.
