pick up my new lj80 this week and need to find a engine to replace the smokey 800cc donk.
pre-requisits for the engine are:
*it must fit without dicking around with the chassie rails or tunnel
*must have a factory 5spd behind it
*has to rev to 6500
*turbo/super charged
*cant be too heavy
*has to be at least 47kw or more standard
*need to be able to get complete half cut not just engine
budget $2500
the other option i have been toying with is to grab a 1ltr and buy a diktator ecu ($350) and efi and turbo that, a few of my mates have turbo honda's and run this ecu so tuning and wiring is sorted and should come in under budget, but its just not as easy as the standard half cut option
cheers mick

JA11 F6A 660cc turbo injected intercooled jimny half cut but will need custom gearbox mount and new hole for the five speed and custom tail shaft
or JA12 jimnt 660cc twin cam all alloy K6A 660cc turbo injected intercooled
Every engine except those and standard engine will require significant tunnel mods due to the very narrow tunnel in the LJ. You could do a dodgy and fit a mega body lift but that could be painful too. Another limiting factor is the steering as the box is right next to the firewall and has 4.68 billion connecting rods to get it to the wheels
also f6a will need the sump modified for the centred diff in the LJ

K6A #1
F6A cappuccino #2
Nothing else is worth bothering with unless you want to cut up the car, at which point a g16b or something becomes possible. A G motor goes in the engine bay fine- it's the tunnel and sump that's the problem

yeah i know they are really the only engines i should use but even when i offer to pay up front the importers run away. There are some in the u.s.a.
for $1200 but the logistics are the killer

I've got a spare F8a that I keep having silly ideas for.
Ages ago I calculated that an AMR500 supercharger would provide about 6PSI with a 1:1 ratio but after some research I learn't these are happy spin much faster than that (about 16'000RPM, so a 2:1 ratio and larger boost isn't out of the question).
The F8a is has the same bore as an F5a so there might be some boost friendly piston options there ("Hi, I'd like to order 4 pistons for an F5a engine" "But they're 3 cylinder engines" "I'm putting them in a 4 cyl" "You're on crack, aren't you?"). Likewise, an F10a has a 65.5 mm bore and an F6a has a 65 so there may be some options there too. Just hope all the piston pin heights ect are the same.
A 5 speed isn't very hard to sort out, Highway-Star reckons it wont fit without mods to the tunnel though. Maybe it'd fit with bodylift?

Building the box itself isn't too hard.
Fitting it nicely is verging on the same work as fitting a G series engine IMO. The only 5 speed I would think that could work without huge mods would be as said above one from a 660cc motor (and I am speculating here).

One would think the gearbox from the earlier F5A engines would fit fit seeing as they probably would of been a type 2 NT Sierra body without the larger trans tunnel? Given the serious lack of power the F5a has I doubt a 5 speed would of been involved and there's still the shifter location issue but that's easy enough to modify into a remote shifter.
Getting your hands on one would probably be just as hard as getting a whole half cut though. :/

Just looked it up, apparently the JA71 (F5a engined SJ) came out in 1986 and had an updated interior so looks like it's was a type 3 with the wider trans tunnel. Still, there's a chance it could fit.
Does anyone know what SJ30s had gearbox wise? Surely just 4 speeds?
I'd love to get a half cut of a later JA11 or a JA22. You get an F6a/K6a with the options of an auto and power steering.
A JA71 half cut would be kinda pointless with no real power advantage over a F10a and no other goodies, not to mention cost.
Gwagen, you wouldn't be wanting to part with your K6a when Blingy is done would you?

If you want more highway speed you could fit a 1 litre engine and get some 1 litre diff centres (4.11 instead of 4.5) and make sure you have a LJ80 transfer case (1.4 high range not like 1.7 high range in a LJ50)
Then it will be exactly the same gearing as a one litre sierra once you add in the taller tyres fitted standard to a LJ.
Also this way you can just fit the 800cc sump to the 1 litre and dont have to worry about the steering issues. or diff clearance issues.
This will give you plenty of time to find exactly what you want rather than rush and be unhappy

If you used a 3cyl, Would you be able to mount the motor more forward to clear the tunnel?

Depending which one you get it'l either have less power than an F8a or about the same amount of power as a 1 litre.
Not worth the expense.

power isnt as much of an issue for me as gearing, i'd be happy with the same as a 1ltr but it has to be able to sit on 110 i know thats a big ask but 5 gears is a must and then a tyre upgrade and 4.1 diff swap should get it close at least.

Cappuccino gearbox is no good. It has a very long/whacky shift housing which is very hard to work around. I did this on Greg's old cap engined car by cutting up the shift rails from a 1.0 box but it wasn't a good outcome. Get an f6a 5speed.

What gearbox can you stick behind a G10A out of a swift? The turbo versions of those make some impressive numbers for a 1ltr 3cyl. Should be a short combo you would think.

i cant find anything here or anyone willing to import one
so an efi turbo 800cc is looking more likely by the second.
would the f5a 5spd out of the jimny bolt to the f8

not that it means alot but mine had a corolla 13k which had been very badly fitted tho some 1 with your skill would make it work alot better
it went very well they have a fair bit of go and even with 32s it had no worries turning
tho it was running the corolla 4 speed and stock t case

You can't do that to an LJ!...................

I'm in the process of fitting a g16b with the 4 speed auto to a lj so maybe that combo could work if you can put up with having an auto

yeah i would prefer an auto with a bit more capacity but theres no room in that engine bay and im already half way through a massive fab job with the sr.
hows the dizzy sit on the g10

hmm the f5a turbo is rated at 38kw vs the f8's 34kw but the f5a has the added benifit of a 5spd and im sure a decent exhaust and front mount would see me hit 45kw.
iam heading back down there tomoro to ponder it some more and i will see what it runs like and what price i'd be paying

Yep....and you can fit a hybrid 5 speed if you want as well, either the one described by 303zuk made from a carry box or the other one made from a late sierra 4 speed and a 1300 5 speed.

Some of the Cappucino chaps used to get impressive numbers with an F8B (yes, B) block out of an 800cc Hatch (3 cyl, 797cc) and using the Turbo F6A head with a Cappucino F6A sump.
Just as a comparison, the F5A twin-cam Turbo makes approx the same power as a F10A (but at higher revs and with less torque), and F6A twin-cam Turbo makes about the same power as a G13A (but at higher revs and with less torque), so you could expect that a F8B with a twin-cam head with turbo and correctly set up with larger injectors and re-mapped ECU could get the same power figures as a G16A. You wouldn't get the torque figures of a G16A, but at least as good and possibly better torque than the F8A.
F8B bellhousing bolt pattern (and clutch/flywheel) is the same as F8A and F10A. F5A and F6A bolt patterns are slightly different. You would need a Jimny/Sierra pattern sump from the F6A rather than the Cappucino sump.
F8B blocks were only ever 6 valve heads, so you might need flycuts on the piston crowns to clear the valves of a 12 valve head, or just double up on head gaskets to keep the CR down.
