I'd still look at the clutch cable first. It might have been stretched. Might have come off the retainer bracket. You'd look like a goat if you did a whole clutch replacement if all ya had was a stretched clutch cable. I know all about that. Wasted about $350 in parts so far going so gun ho and not checking the little things. I now call it the stekky approach. Check everything that's related to the part you suspect is fucked. Don't just run off and do what all these mechanics tell ya too...
