Does anyone know the legalities of building a rear bar with an incorporated tow hitch along the lines of this one? The departure angle sucks with the standard low hung towbar.

any towbar to meet standards has to be fully FEA tested. home made ones are not allowed.

i will let you know in march as thats when mine gets inspected next.
they probably wont notice the bar so i will point it out and see what they say.

Hayman reece make ( or used to make) a truck tow bar kit which is just a bar that runs between the two rails and then two multi fit plates which you weld on in the right place. Ths is rated pretty high too.

So the rating is in the design, so if you can get it designed and certified then its legal like everything else you do to your car

I plan on making one pretty much the same as the one in that pic. With all the other shit on the car I think that is the last thing the cops would go for. Although with my lux they never noticed the box front shaft, 8 inch rear shackles, xover steering, dropped hangers and track bar. They just got me on mud flaps and tyre size.

I think as long as it looks like it should be there it will be fine. Other wise build off one of those haymen reece tow bars.

This was built by a mate & has just been approved by an engineer in SA, once the extra bracing was done.

If you are going to the trouble of building a rear it's not that hard to build in the extra strength required for a towbar.

This is what he said about the load rating.....

Not sure how he came up with the max load rating. We discussed what I wanted to be able to tow. I asked for a car trailer and vehicle weight. He agreed and came up with the figure of 2.5T. I am guessing this is allowed as it is under the 2.75T tare weight that the vehicle has on the compliance plate. I'll ask when I see him next week and let you know!

Thanks for the replies guys. Thats nice work your mates done there Atari. I might talk to hayman reece about the universal fit bar. I've done a couple of things like RUF and G16 transplant that don't worry me as they aren't going to rip off the back of my zuk and kill somebody lol. I think this one will have to go through the right authorities.

dont forget that a sierra is only rated for towing 450kg
so you can pretty much use alfoil and it would be strong enough.
