Hey peoples

Sorry for the novel, please read this as i really need help. I just thought it would help paint a clearer picture of what is going on.

Just got back from out trip to Fraser Island. On the trip it became apparent that there is something wrong with my Jim. After a bit of a long haul on the highway at 100-110 km/h on a very hot day, the engine started to misfire mercilessly, had to pull over and stop. The engine would idle horribly almost stopping, the engine light would flash like its part of a rave party (no real pattern). After about 20 or so seconds it would come good again, idle well and no engine light on at all. thought it might have just been some kind of blockage and onward we went. This happened quite a few more times, decided to call RACQ/NRMA. He could did not have anything to scan it with and said the spark plugs needed replacing, so i went to Repco and replaced them. It still happened, same thing, try and hold 100 km/h or over for an extended period of time and it would start all over again. So i took it to an auto electrician, he scanned it and there were no codes, he also spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with it. and came up with nothing. So i decided to keep going and take it easy. discovered that if i stayed under 100 km/h it would be fine. It also appears to happen more frequently when it is hot. with the cool of the night I could push it a bit harder and it would not happen as much when its hot. The Jim was fine on Fraser, absolutely no issues over the 4 days were were there. it did happen on the way back down the beach in the soft trying to beat the tide.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Does anyone have any clue what might cause this?

have a search around for jimny crank angle sensor... it's quite a common problem on them

wouldn't that cause a code? i will search on that tough, a mate suggested it might be the fuel pump of filter.

jsut cause they have an OBII plug under the dash doesnt mean they are OBDII, most scanners dont work

dont know if that year can do the short the terminal and read the flashes though

EGR valve?

Mine has been idling like crap the last week or so, like it would sit 450RPM while idling, then jump up to 1200RPM, then go back down. It also threw a engine light, so i took the car down to suzuki this morning and they suspect that the EGR valve is blocked open which is causing it. Just a thought....

x2.... Mine did this about 6 months ago, stuttered in and out of it for a week or so before constantly running rough.... It threw a code and put the engine into limp mode which was why it ran rough.

Could also be crank sensor too though

maybe i should just take it to Suzuki, will they charge a shitload to figure it out tough?

Ring them up and ask them.... They can't charge you to fix it without asking you, but they may have a diagnostics charge if they find the problem

How do i test it?

I am going to say crank angle sensor too. When my m13a got hot it would splutter as if it was starving of fuel, but not stall, so I chased petrol problems for like a year before finally googling this up and buying one off ebay. Hasn't happened since ~_~. It was only like $70 or something too, so a pretty cheap option if that isn't it.

Its located behind the alternator which would be a hot spot and is a bit of a pain to swap over.

I forgot to mention it happened non stop to me on a snow trip once lol, i guess all the slow hard driving kept the engine hot even though it was like 5 outside :/.

Drive the car at 100 if coughs and you have to pull over then after a few minutes it comes good that's a pretty good test for it. I bet it will run fine all day long if you're only doing 60.

Take a bottle of water with you, 100kph for over an hr, when it start's to play up, open bonnet & look for a lil black thing behind the Alt on the eng block, douse it with water & on your way again, problem should be gone.

I'd put both my nutt's on the Crank sen ( don't need em anyway )

Cam angle sensor does it. as said douse with water. does it on a hot day. Situated at left rear of donk. Been there done that. Get new one from suzistore wa. about $120.00. takes 60 secs to replace.

Stek be carefull. maybe just one.

But they just hang there....

There will be a code stored, or should be.

between the 2 the cam sen get's more air flow, keeping it cooler, i've replace lot's, same for the swift's

Pulls 90-95 km/h all day.................. once i go to 100, sure enough it happens.

Problem solved, Thank you all for your input. It was the Crank angle sensor. I fixed it a while ago, just forgot to update this thread.

I replaced mine a few months back but there was nothing wrong with it. good to have a spare though!
