Hey guys I'm new to the suzuki world. After my girlfriend just getting a brand new swift she has convinced me to sell my 2005 land cruiser prado and get a jimmy. I'll be buying one brand new in black once i have sold the prado. How do they go on fuel? km to the tank... What mods will i have to do to get it going well off road. is there any problems i can expect to have with it? does it have a lsd in the rear? i was planning on a 2inch lift, 31 bf muds or a similar mud tyre, rear locker if there is no lsd in rear and a front locker too, xrox winch bar, 2 spotties, make some sliders myself, uhf and possibly a roof rack with awning (only have on car when it'll be used) then a snorkel and enjoy. And lastly does anyone have any advice for brands of lift kits? maybe put up a pic or two?

thanks in advance

Look out for the wobble. Some Jimnys cone out factory with the wobble.
I'm geting between 300 to 400km on a tank.
You won't be able to fit a 31 with a 2inch lift.
You'll have to cut the guards. Wait for monkey to chime in he has 31s
Some protection would be good.

I'd say drive the car before you put mods on it
You'll be surprise were it can go.
Drive it until you see what needs upgrading.
Don't just rush out and mod your car.

Just my 2c

Zooky is right on the money... drive it first before any mods.. to decide exactly what you need... Zooky's jim has only 215's... and it goes nearly any where..... You might find that you only need 235's..

A good driver can take a zook with minimal mods nearly any where 8)

:hey:

2" lift and 31's...have fun with that, i have a 110" lift and 31's***wait's for g-wagon to mention my tyre size, compared to how much lift i have*** , lot's of chopping needed, even with a body lift  ...you also need to think about gearing (it's fairly $$$ to gear a late model jimny $1000+)

Here's what my 09 jimny looked like on 235's and 80mm lift

Image

It had some good flex for a "off the self kit" IMO

Image

Here's what it looks like now with 110mm lift (dropped down 10mm now :) ) and 31's

Image

And with the current suspension setup, ( will talk about that later if your interested?)

Image

Jimny bit's lift is the best lift for a jimny IMO, better ride than most other lift's out there, but it doesn't have as much flex as the tough dog lift...no big deal tho if you have a locker

As the others have said, wheel it and then mod it from there to suit your terrain. 2" lift, 215's muddies and a rear locker is a good comb and makes for a pretty capable setup for most tracks over here...

will be a very different car to drive compared to your prado.

31's on a jimny is a bit of a pain in the arse to achieve.
but can be done if your not afraid to give it the choppy choppy as you see with monkeys. (there are also lots of uk and European jimnys with big tyres)

no clue what kind of 4x4ing your into but a mild lift and some mildly bigger rubber (215's or 235's) might be all you need at the end of the day.

I only have 215's and 40mm lift and it suits my needs perfectly. I never find myself thinking "ah i need more lift" but that comes down to where i live.. there just isn't much extreme 4x4ing to be had =[... just beach, dunes and a couple of small hills really... I also have lockers front and rear but at the end of the day i dont use them that much. haha i do like them alot though.

It really does depend on terrain as to what you need.
I had ~32s on my Pajero and a stock sierra would out drive it, but it was perfect for touring/high country.
I dont think 215s are enough on my Jimny for what Im driving, but once you go bigger you need lift and gears, which I dont actually want to do to my car while I'm over here.

It does sount like your prepared to spend a bit upfront to build the car you want, but like the others have said, you need to take it out on your terrain (or at least give us an idea on what your driving) before decisions can be made.

Hi JTD, I'm on my second Jimny, the first one I set-up as an all-rounder with a leaning toward crawling activities. My new Jimny is being set-up still as an all-rounder but with more of a leaning towards touring and beach camping. A duke will always be a bit of a compromise due to it's size but with careful planning a Jimny can be a great choice. Good luck with the sale of the Prado.

How's that cheating? That's my setup when I go wheeling...

yeah, I call cheating too :D

Seriously though, how well does it articulate the opposite way? I assume you leave the other side intact.

It dose flex better and feels a bit more stable off-road, but suck's on side angles on the side that has the bolt pulled :?

I guess it is cheating tho, it's like pulling a pin on drop shackles when you go wheeling

I thought you couldn't buy a Jimny brand new because they've been outlawed to be sold new since they don't have ABS? (or something)?

thanks for the reply's guys. It will be a slow build as i will do it bit by bit. My aim for driving is beach/mud and smaller hill climbs. I have been out to ormeau twice and logan village 3 times in the prado so I'm still learning the basic's but am picking it up. took my stock prado further then a gu patrol ute with 33's and 3inch lift because the owner girled it after 4 hill climbs lol. Monkey's set up is pretty sweet i'd love to build one like that over time. Do many of you guys that go out in a group in brisbane? What is the "wobble" that has been mentioned. do they have problems with the front suspension once lifted?

They already have abs. They are not being sold in vic because they are in a different country to Australia, newer adrs will eventually rule them out for the rest of Australia.
They do not, and will never come out new with ESC. (Electronic stability control). Its up to the brand new cars now, there is only so much safety you can put into an old car. The Jimnys main body frame and chassis are 14 years old now! The only improvements has been accesories. 8O

I do not like the way the technology is going for cars. They are getting too technical. I like the safety side. But thats the end of it.

Just search 'Jimny wobble', or just 'wobble'

Hi and welcome! I came from a GQ Patrol with 2" lift and 33" tyres to a JImny with 2" lift and 27" tyres. The short, narrow wheel base means in most circumstances that you can get over things a longer wheel base couldn't with much higher clearance. In some circumstances that won't work of course. I go 4WDing with friends in jacked up land cruisers and Patrols and I often find myself the only one on the other side of obstacles. The mighty Jimny frequently amazes them. The big issue the Jimny has with larger tyres is the small engine capacity. I have 215s (205 are standard) and even with those, power is noticeably lower - especially on the highway. You'll find it will get really sluggish and thirsty with larger tyres. In my opinion, a locker is a better mod than higher lift because you'll maintain drive when you lift a wheel, though you will be very surprised how far it can get without the locker, too. Stability is another thing against too much lift. Short wheel bases are easier to tip over on washouts a long wheel base will cover with ease. keeping the centre of gravity low is important. A Jimny is a great move, but the most important change people who are downsizing need is a change in mindset. Because it is a very different type of vehicle with very different strengths and weaknesses, many of the standard "big boy" mods are either unnecessary or impractical.
