Hi All,
Has anyone ever had issues with engaging low and high range gears.
I seem to have to play around till it will engage
Can the linkages be greased or do they get play in them?
Also noticed in low range the gearbox is a little whiney.
Are these cheap to repair?

Check the oil level. If whine persists go for a drive without your Mrs in the car.

They degrade over time and can cause this exact issue. Sometimes they even prevent the stick from being moved at all. $10 part

Hi Sman, Sounds normal if the 'transmission is wound up' and the transfer box is tight - such as if you have been in high range for a while on hard surfaces and then want to select low. If this is the case, try reversing a couple of metres or driving forward in a zig-zag to take the pressure off the gears. Low range will always whine - that is normal. Reubs

I have had this issue before and did exactly as reubs suggested and still could not get it to engage. Wheeled for an hour in 4H and randomly tried to change into 4L and didn't have an issue in engaging.
