This might be a silly question bub when your 4wding can you turn your snorkel head backwards so no shit gets into it won't affect the flow or anything.im just new with all this.

the engines not going to die if thats what your asking. I think its not worth it cos the vortex effect around the edges would be still putting dirt and crap into the path of intake air anyway. its not enough vac to overcome engine suction and make you stall.

Think of an old school car with the back window open. dirt would fly in if you didnt have those little deflector things on the sides. and how about when you slow down?

give it a go. try it for a period of time each way and compare how grotty the filter gets after a change.

Foam filters ( uni Filter) work great, don't hear of too many trial bikes shitting themselves from dust through them. It isn't much added air restriction to what you already have.

Reversing the snorkel head won't reduce the amount of dust that reaches the filter, but it will reduce the leaves/bugs/sticks that get jammed down the snorkel head and end up in the air filter housing. It might also help if you hit bog holes at maximum retard as the spray won't end up going straight down the snorkel head.

I don't understand adding another sock in the inlet air that acts as a trap to catch all this stuff. Whilst it might be effective to improve dust filtration, now all the junk that gets past the snorkel head ends up sitting in/on the sock, restricting flow, so it's a high maintenance solution. Once that stuff reached the stock filter housing it would sit pretty harmlessly on the bottom of the housing.

These aren't new ideas. Safari sold them in the early 1990's.

If you want large debris removal, dust pre cleaning, a water trap and minimum maintenance, get a Donaldson pre cleaner.

It's only to get mud and shit down to the airbox because it's happens all the time when I 4wd. might just turn my snorkel head around that sounds like the best option.

Sounds like you're hitting stuff quick or spending lots of time spinning wheels in bog holes. Whilst there's good reasons to turn the snorkel head around, I'd also have a look at your driving style if you are regularly getting enough mud down the snorkel to cause issues.

i turned my snorkel head backwards and noticed a HUGE difference in how much dust i had in my air filter... IMO running it backwards is a great idea... even though it looks odd at first, it is practical.

Wonder how loud it will be?

Not as loud as you'd expect. In Piggles I run a 3" tube from the stock G16B Vitara air box into the cab behind the glove box.

You can see it here:

Image

Running with 1/2 doors on you can't hear it at all. With full doors on, it does make some audible induction noise at full throttle, but it's neither loud or unpleasant.

I don't like the bulk that snorkels add to the pillar area - they all seem to end up broken on our cars.

Steve.

This is why I am doing it. I hate snorkels, they are just in the way all the time.
And I won't need to worry about crap getting into the air box unless the cab is full and I've got bigger issues at that point.

Even a 3.8 with a pod Filter about 2ft from the passenger seat in a buggy wasn't annoying.

And why would you want air forced into it?

For the full hectik supercharger effect - OMG it is just like NOS!

Deego - there is NO truth in in myth that a snorkel adds power by "ramming" air into the engine. Many years ago there was a thread where someone did the sums and the "ram" would have to have been bigger than the windscreen to see any rise in pressure in the inlet manifold.

Having said that Suzukikid, that vacuum cleaner hose is really terrible for flow. Convoluted hose has much more turbulence than smooth pipe so it's probably making the engine work harder than necessary.

No, I don't get oil odours in the car from the intake.

Some trucks have a switchable in cab air intake,
no need to have smells in cab all the time,
but you do need to remember to switch it on before fording.

I worry about a back fire into cab, don't know if thats an unreasonable fear.

If your engine backfires through the intake there's some pretty big problems with the motor.

seems to happen all the time with BBQ gas, but that's what you get for running a car on BBQ gas.

Also, if there's noticeable oil vapour (smell) coming back out of the intake I'd say the motor was pretty flogged.

And probably best to get your passengers to keep thier legs closed, too.
Don't want anything getting sucked in there :|
