i have a 99 GV with the steel front diff
the front diff does not engage but the air pump works fine
any idea's ?
can i strip the diff and lock it (not diff lock )
then use vit hubs to engage /disengage 4wd ?
or what other options are open for me ?

Define "works fine" - how did you test it?

Just so you understand where I'm coming from, if you're hearing the pump running it doesn't mean it works fine, you can still have a defective pump even though it pumps air.

If the freewheel clutch actuator has in fact failed, your options are to fit a diff center from an earlier Vitara (just don't ask me which one), manually engage the clutch and then either weld it engaged or lock it in position with nylon cable ties.

I would replace the whole center with a vit one, manual hubs and put a new bush and seals in there to stop the CV popping out. becomes all manual then and fool proof

this is the seal im talking about

Must've gotten lost during the server migration - I'll see what I can do to repost them this evening.

That does sound like the pump is fine, but, it would be extremely rare for the pump to cut off after 3 seconds without engaging the freewheel clutch - unless there was a blockage in the line between the two.

Can you get hold of a hand pump?

Image

This is what I use - connect it to the diff and with no more than 10 psi, you should hear the actuator transfer and if you rotate the front drive shaft, you should feel it click in.

You say the 4wd light on the dash doesnt work? is it the globe or a fault in the air operation?

Some GVs have a separate 4WD controller, some have this function built into the ECU/PCU (power train controller - handles buth engine & transmission) - the controller turns the light on & off based on electrical feed back from the pump module - a defective pump module OR a problem internal to the diff can cause the light not to turn on - in fact, typically anything preventing 4WD from being engaged will result in the light not coming on.

It's possible to reach the front drive shaft without jacking the vehicle up (at least I can), just set the hand brake, select 4HI, engine off, slide under, grab the drive shaft & twist it - it should not turn.

the front drive shaft does not turn in 2wd or 4wd with handbrake on and gearbox in neutral
nor does it turn in 4wd when front wheels are jacked up and spun by hand

i put my rear axle on stands today and idled in first gear.
then i changed from 2wd to 4wd without using the clutch.
after about twenty changes there was a loud bang from
under the car and it tried to pull off the stands.
so i think i have 4wd back but now the ABS light
is lit at all times. any ideas on this ?

i have read that if you do not use the 4wd system it becomes hard to select
and i was told when i bought it that this car had never been off road
so 12 years no use..............................

8O safe

before disconnecting the battery pull error codes to see if there are any & then disconnect it for a few minutes to clear the ecu & see if any come back.

there is an attachment nearly at the bottom of this page on how to pull the codes
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6451&hilit=j20a+error+codes

SQ625 codes are in here

A code 12 indicates the ECU is not detecting any errors - and on a manual transmission vehicle, you're unlikely to see any codes that relate to the transmission or transfer case (or 4WD control system), they're not controlled by the ECU.

Awsome. An error code to tell you there are no errors detected. WTF.

This ^^^^^^ is due to doing this vvvvvvvv

laurie wrote:

The ABS system registers the rear wheels moving but the front wheels not and after a set nubmer of rotations or distance or time considers the front sensors (at the wheel) to be faulty due to no signal and goes "Hey dude, look at this pretty light on the dash that tells you something is wrong"
As soon as you drive and all wheels are moving and all sensors are registering that they are moving the ABS will think all is well and turn of the light
