Do you know the engine's background, or how long it has been sitting? When I did my swap last year the water jackets in the engine had some junk in them and once I did the swap and got it heated up all that junk circulated in the cooling system and blocked the rad.

I have used the standard radiator previously and if it's in good nick it will be enough to cool a 1.6.

The vehicle has been off the road for around 12 months.. but was started about 2 months before i got it. What the plan is now, hilux radiator, with thermo (no eng fan). and replace the thermostat!! Fingers crossed

Royce and Joe will poo-poo using Toy parts and thermo fans, but whatever floats your boat. Replacing the 'stat wont hurt.

After I had overheating issues with mine I got the rad cleaned out and since then it's been running fine. That was thru Brisbane summer, so hotter than you'll ever see in Tas no doubt.

I agree with Damo. A 1.3 rad in good nic should easily keep up with the sweltering heat down in Tas. My 8 valve g16 never got above halfway on the guage in the soft sand at Fraser on a 30+ degree day. More likey the systems clogged somewhere along the line. The only time mine ever got hot was when I was running it without the radiator fan shroud.

Id check the thermostat before changing rads. Have you checked it yet?
A thermostat stuck shut will make it overheat for obvious reasons, and a thermostat stuck open or missing all together will cause the coolant to flow through the radiator to quickly, greatly reducing the efficiency of the radiator.
So many people think removing a thermostat helps keep an engine cool.
I agree with Hybrid, a HEALTHY 1.3 rad should do the job fine.
But if you find your radiator does need replacing, Id go with one from a Vitara.

If its any help my LJ uses a plastic tank 1.3 radiator with a viscous fan (standard) and a shroud . Doesn't get hot .

before i bought my sierra it had been sitting for 6-8months. A few months after getting it the temp started to sore. Changed the thermo and still no change....took the radiator to get cleaned (caps off top and bottom) and turns out it was 90% blocked, externaly it looked brand new, but i guess something in the block blocked the radiator.

hmmmm, thanks for the replys peoples!! Half way through putting the lux rad in there now.. with that, and a new stat.. should fix the prob!!
