I am doing the falcon alternator upgrade today i cant get the cable off the starter motor from the negative battery terminal to replace it.

My question is can i earth the battery on my sierra to somwhere else in the engine bay or doed it need the be earthed to that point on the starter motor? Or do i need to upgrade the negative cable from the battery at all or just leave it?

I will be upgrading the positive to thicker gauge of course

Starter/Engine Block Earthed to chassis

Battery must be Earthed to Chassis and Body

Mine works fine, Might also depend on your battery/wiring. (mine is an ultima under the pass seat+thick cable)

Upgrade the negative wire to match the positive wire you are using. The circuit is being completed through the negative wire back to the battery.

I STRONGLY suggest that you have a HEAVY direct earth between the battery and the starter/engine block/bell housing/transmission - omitting this can cause some very puzzling symptoms - burnt/smoking clutch/accelerator/speedometer cables, welded/pitted transmission gears/bearings etc.

There should also be a second smaller earth cable between the battery and the chassis/body - your Suzuki would have been fitted with cables like I describe when it left the factory.

The existing negative will usually be quite a bit larger that the original alternator output cable, and will in most cases be adequate - it's also the starter return, and in most cases the starter current draw is significantly higher than the alternator output.

hi thanks for the replies

i know about upgrading the cables to a larger diameter due to the higher amperage alternator i was just wondering where to eather it to

all good i have it all wired up now just waiting on a pulley to finish the conversion
