I cant get the Damn bottom pulley off. because of that i cant even get the timing belt cover off. I cant get the cam pulley off. (i've seen the advice about the rags vice and rattle gun) I EVEN BROUGHT A DAMN RATTLE GUN! ffs.

i've replaced timing belts before. and a broken cam. But im finding weird things left right and **** center.

half of the others are stripped. But they've ALL been punched like that. any ideas anyone? why would someone do this?
or is this just normal practice?

Also any tips on removing carbon build up would be greatly welcomed.

They've been punched like that because they fall out all the time. Fortunately, the screws are larger than the oil drain holes in the head so they can't end up anywhere too dangerous, but it's rare to take a rocker cover off and see them all in place - there's normally a couple missing.

Make sure you have the head trued up before you put it back together. Many people find head gaskets continue to fail once the first one has gone.

I tbought i would get away without giving the head a skim. BAD MISTAKE.

You may need to get/buy a chain wrench

Use a drill to drill out the centrepunch marks so you can turn the screw.
Use "Easi-outs" to remove the ones that are stripped


Also any tips on removing carbon build up would be greatly welcomed.
Only one sure way. Elbow grease. Use a brass wire brush and kerosene

Im here. just been at working. and sleeping. went and looked at the car when i got home. shrugged and walked away. i think i'll leave it today.

I have bugeted for a head skim. but only if it needs it. i've head of a couple of ways of checking using a straight edge or a piece of glass.

but while getting the head skimmed is sound advice. its not really going to help me much if i cant even get the timing cover off. i slipped the timing belt off by undoing all the screw's on the cover and slipping it off with a screwdriver and the help of the starter motor. Im now thinking that this was a mistake. not both the pulleys are free to spin and i cant get them off. i've tried putting it in gear. but the engine mounts twist makeing using my long spanner feel like winding up a massive spring. there's nothing "solid" to throw my weight against (probably why the rattle gun didnt work)..... im stuck. the next thing im going to try is to put the head back on. but not today. been up since 3. wich is the same amount of hours i managed to sleep.

AND.... wtf can i do about getting the rocker arms off my head? 4 of the screws are threaded completely. they're all partially bent as if someons done them up too hard PLUS the fact that theres punch marks allaround the edges. Wich is a brilliant idea that im going to try to remember the next time i want a screw NEVER TO MOVE AGAIN. sigh. I have a dremel im going to see if grinding bits away will help at all. it will be a bit of work. even on the less damaged screws and i dont really have high hopes for it working. but my time is cheap. I guess.

or on the other hand. anyone know of a 8v cylinder head that can be had on center link wages within driving distance of perth?

Gold nomad. Something strange happened or im just blind. but im sure your notes wherent there the first time i loaded this page.

I Completely forgot that chain wrenches exist. like a vice grip + chain? i seem to remember seeing one and thinking it would be handy.

Easy outs? *googles furiously.... wow. never seen these before. what a simple idea!

i've plenty of elbow grease but i've been warned of filling my oil/water journals with carbon filings. still seems the best way tho. hopefully when its done. and i turn my key off the motor will actually F****ing stop.

Have u got the cam belt cover off? from what im reading maybe im missing the point but ur trying to get the crank pulley or gear off? the five lil hex bolts take the pully off thus the cover comes off easy..?
will a phillips head still grip the screws alittle? if so get one of those hammer drivers and hit it itll spin.

You can remove the locking effect o the center punch dimples by drilling them out.
Driil does not have to be deep but just have diameter larger than deform metal around
block and screw head. Bit like make a slightly bigger dimple with a drill bit.
I suspect screw might still be tight though.

If you go to a decent machine shop, guy will suggest hardness test on head first.
Overheated alloy head's will go soft and keep blowing gasket weather skimsd or not.

The head also needs to be pressure-tested to see if there are any cracks in it.
Talk to HM Gem Engines. They can help

If you're gonna do, do it once and do it right

Btw, if you use a chain wrench, be sure to wrap a rag around the pulley(s)

jerryx4 thakns! i went and counted the hex bolts and only found 4. had a closer look and found a little munted up imperial screw. pulley basily fell off after the use of some vice grips.

buying a hammer driver after work tomorrow as my current one cant be used with screw bits.

yesterday i had the timing cover off. replaced the water pump. degreased and pressure cleaned the block head and intake wire buffed the pistons every gasket surface and every spot of rust i could find on the body.

in doing this. i think i've found (one of) the original problem's. it looks as if the intake manifold gasket was leaking coolant into the intakes. i noticed when i separated the manifold that i was missing two bolts from accross the top and theres a dark oily stain radiating out from the coolant... holes (?) in the manifold that end at the coolant ports. would go a way to explain all the carbon and white smoke.

I now need to find a good machine shop in the perth area? any one have any good experience's with any?

and finally if you had 700 EXTRA dollars in your pocket to play with would there be any upgrade's you'd consider at this point? im allready running an 32/36 empi. i was thingking exhaust/cam/??? valve work??

If there was oil stains in the coolant passages you probably have a cracked head.

there was buckets of oil in my coolant. thats why I pulled the head in the first place. why dose this point to a cracked head and not a leaking seal?

I've just had a go at the screw with the impact driver. win on 4. fail on 6. left handed drill bit didnt work either. i'lll try again tomorrow

As the cooling system is supposed to be pressurised, coolant usually goes into the oil, not the other way round, But to make sure, just get the head crack tested by a machining outfit.
