Hey guys. Never been camping. Just wanting some help on basic like tent, sleeping bag, stetcher, esky size, cooking and food. Any input and help is much appreciated for this city slicker lol

Serriously though ya just need something to sleep in, something to eat and something to drink. Every thing else is just for comfort. The more times ya go camping the better prepared you will be.

my input is that the bed you sleep on makes all the difference... nothing worse than not getting any sleep cos your air mattress deflated or whatever you're on isnt comfy/big enough.

Water is the next most important - don't forget you'll want to wash your hands now and then etc, that its not just for drinking.

Insect repellent, food, clothes (warmth), spare batteries for torches, bog roll etc.

A couple of things I take camping apart from the obvious:
-water proof matches
-first aid kit
-saw and axe
-tea bags
If you are going remote, tell someone where you are going and when you are due back.

Camping box, this box is something i've slowly added to over the years with things that make camping easier, off the top of my head it contains
small bottle of cooking oil
small bottle of washing up liquid (both of these are unlabelled, i suggest labelling them after drunkingly using washing up liquid instead of oil)
salt and pepper
cooking utensils
click top stove
spare gas cylinder
plates and cups
hammer
sunscreen
bug spray
match's and or ligoter
pocket knife
some nylon rope
toilet paper

i refill this box every time i come back from camping and add certain things if going away longer. its always ready to go at an instant. and the box lives inside my ice box so i can always find it

IF a longer trip i add tarps, poles an guy ropes

hahaha last time I had bacon eggs and cereal for breakie, I took a full cheese platter, assorted salami's for lunch Lamb roast and potato jackets for dinner followed by some chocolate and then beeer.

you dont need to be able to cook...buy an ice box...fill empy milk cartons with water and freeze. line the bottom of the ice box with these. take cold meats, bpcon, eggs and bread and youll be right for brekky and lunch. mabey some meat an frozen veg for tea!! just throw it in a pan and turn it every now and again.

sounds too easy alexxx. ill just have to give it a crack. But why fill up milk cartons rather than maybe 1.25 coke bottle? Wouldnt the carton leak/sweat more than a plastic bottle?

pretty sure he means the plastic 2lt milk bottles, i do the same & can get 6 days out of a bag of ice.

another pro tip is to chill your esky before going with another frozen milk bottle for a couple days & make sure the food/drink is cold before putting it in the esky.

Nah bullshit, I drove mine from newy to south oz and camped all the way there and back, it was packed to the gunwales, but that was for 2 people and I took heaps of shit I didn't need.

For me the 2 most important things for camping are a good sleeping bag and a good fire

What size/Liter esky would best suit me. Say one person. 2 day camp trip. I have a few smaller eskys but that could get annoying!

dont waste ur time with an esky. the ice melts really quick. buy a quality ice chest. 40L is plenty enough for 1 person 2-5 days.

tip> fill ur ice box with COLD beer before adding ice.

There is nothing wrong with eskys just so long as ya but a good one. I have 3 with the smallet being 100ltr and all of them will keep ice for a week in 40 deg heat.

If I can go for a week in an LJ then you shouldn't have any problem and don't forget to take a spade.

I can go several days with 2 people in the vit and the camping gear takes up less room than climbing gear

Best thing to do is dont make shit complex! make everything as simple as possible so its easier to setup and pack away and use.

Simple quality tent, you dont need 7 rooms, super vortex insulation, stand up to a cyclone, just something big enough to sleep in and store your gear
Good quality sleeping bag of the right temp rating and a self inflating mattress, good ones pack up tiny and are still great to sleep on
GOOD! head torch, not some $3 thing, get a Princeton tech, Black Diamond, Petzl, Led Lenser one, bright enough to see 100m if you need to, easily light up the area you are in and can dim down to read in your tent
Work out what you want to eat, then work out how much gear and time you'll need to do that then come up with something simpler.
My standard camping meals
Porridge or cereal for breakfast, easy to pack the little sachets and fast to prepare, bugger stuffing around with stoves and bacon and eggs and crap
I dont really do lunch, I just take museli bars and stuff and snack all day
Dinner some ravioli is easy to boil with a little stove and pot, or some microwave rice and stag chilli, mix in pot and heat.
so one $15 mini stove, a $11 gas cannister, $10 pot and a spork, theres your cooking kit.

Get a good chair and some shelter type thing (those shelter things that hang off the back of your car are compact and small) and you are camping.
