I was told/under the impression they were 1040 or similar - 120K psi

Theres also different ratings for psi ultimate vs yield -it all gets a bit loose and confusing.

Are there any factory diffs you know of that have similar width and are full floater?

Series landrover rear (leaf spring)

Full floating axles are generally used for load carrying, they are much more expensive to manufacture than a semi float axle, so they are uncommon in lighter vehicles.

In fact, most landcruisers in the US market are semi float rear. (40, 60 and 80 series)

Here goes:

Vitara axle housing from a 1.6 litre car, Including diff centre. Wrecker - $150?
Spindle adapter plates, Seals, Seal adapters: $70 + postage
Axles: US$550 + postage
A pair of complete sierra front hub assemblies, as unbolted from the steering knuckle. Wrecker $150? 1.0 (Disc), NT or WT are all the same.
Drive flanges from a 1.0 or GV (freewheeling hubs will work, but they aren't as strong. $Good luck :D (I think they are $66 each from suzuki)
Shortened brake hard line from the vitara $10 at a brake shop
Two brake lines to match Sierra NT front specs $40 or so
Two weld on brake line clips score them from an old housing or chassis $free
Brake proportioning valve $70ish
New spring pads or swap your spring pads over $?
Diff breather barb $5
Some scrap steel sheet to make the oil dams
8X 8mm bolts approx 30mm long to bolt the plates on $10

If you were running a WT sierra, a transfer hand brake. (or line lock if you aren't concerned about legality.
It's unlikely whatever locker you were running will swap into the vitara centre.
The front will need re-gearing to suit the ratio of the vitara rear.
U bolts and bumpstops should swap over but the bumpstops may require some tweaking
We have not found the rear driveshaft does not need modification, but you might want to check - every car we've dropped one into has bumpstop spacing.

Hope that helps

Like everything, it adds up in cost, but some careful scrounging might score you most of the parts for almost nothing.

Sorry, just re read my post and the driveshaft thing doesn't make sense.

I meant to say the stock driveshaft should not require modification, but the cars we have fitted these diffs to are bumpstop spaced so I can't be sure if that's true for everyone.

Hey Steve,
Are those 300M axles still 28spline? Can the Sierra spool be used in the vit centre?

Cheers

They are 26 spline, a sierra/vit mini spool and vit autolocker etc can be used in the vit centre.

I believe tanshi introduced a little confusion into the thread about the 28 spline.

As per axles
I ordered mine and paid a $300 deposit about 2 hours ago.
One-offs are still $550/set,

I believe they're all $550 a set now. The $500 a pair pricing was dug out of the old Pirate thread and was a few years old.

And Stockman - yes - as per jdk81, They're the same spline as stock sierra/vitara rear. I am using a TT mini spool that came out of a sierra rear in my vitara rear.

I can't comment on the interchangeability of auto lockers between vitara and sierra centres.

Hey not sure if my message got to you? I'm after a set. Let me know you bank details. I assume they will go in a Auspost satchel? If not my postcode is 2615.

Cheers.

I have your PM Stockman - When I've picked up the balance of the seals I'll send them out.

The owner of the housing in this thread came up today and we did a bit more assembly,

Seals in place

Image

The spindle needs to have the bronze guide bush removed so the seal area of the shaft will pass though the spindle.

At which point the spindle can be installed.

The axle slid in

And the drive flange bolted up.

Steve, At risk of sounding stupid, was there a reason why the axle isn't secured on the outer flange with circlips ?

It can't really move more than a couple of mm. It bottoms against the cross shaft in the diff so the clip wouldn't really do anything. It can't come out because the splines prevent it (and a circlip wouldn't make any difference. We had circlip grooves on the EN-26 axles, but none of us have ever installed clips and it's not been an issue - They seem redundant so I didn't bother having them machined on the 300M axles.

It's a bit different on the front where steering can cause the axle to thrust inwards a bit, but lots of people run with no circlips on the front too without issue.

Silly question; what is centralizing the axle? I can only assume the spindle id (where the Bush was) is the OD of the axle or am i confused?
