so is this mean a Z9 is a good filter or that a toyota 3l and 5l engine was just a shit design?

I serviced my own XD Falcon for 20 years. The Z9 was used across the whole range of Ford engines in the XD model from the 6 cylinder to the V8. This filter was developed in the late 1970's and continued I think through to the XE and XF range probably into the 1990's.

bigger shims needed on the 3L from 135,000km is not impressive for Toyotas past hitory of reliability

There was a goat who said the TB42 was designed by Ford, I felt it was also a bit sus
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/nissan-p ... ndex2.html

I will see how it goes with the Z9, so far so good. All previous oil changes at around 5000km left filter heavy and oil black
with g13bb motor since new, rebuilt g16b no different after 3 oil changes.

apart from sticking blue oval badges on the Y60 production line & a slightly different trim level etc, i doubt ford had any involvement in the design at all... it was all part of the badge engineering BS in the late 80's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Button_car_plan

the other cross breeds between the 2 was the Nissan Ute/XF Falcon ute & the Nissan Bluebird/Ford Corsair

As said, the Z9 is the standard filter on all ford 6cyls up to who knows when, as well as holden V8's, chev V8's, any land rover V8 etc etc. Basically every second Aussie car, and also millions of yank cars. I have one on my mustang, and there is one on the SBC in my chevy, and 2 more on my fathers old range rovers. They are cheap because them make millions of them whereas the smaller ones used on zukes they probably only make a few million of.

If a larger filter fits (within reason) without hitting the suspension or anything else while in use then there is no harm in using it.

x3 on the ford rebadging

As long as there is an anti flow back valve and by pass valve most small filters made for 4-5 litres in capacity should do as long its much cheaper than the z418, just so peeps know it on my suzuki carry 1999 model van that I converted

I hope you are feeling like Julia Gillard proud of your bigger rear end than mine :) I did believe it for a few hours till I was reminded of the rebadging crimes of our motor industry. What a horrible era!

Back on topic the Z9 is running like a charm, no issues with oil pressure on startup
sounds even quieter cold or hot started

What's wrong with the Holden Drover, Holden Barina and Holden Scurry?

And Z9 was the Universal Ford filter, while Holden/GM/Chev engines used the Z30.

more medium = better filtration (subject to micron size) and less pressure loss. Oil pump will make enough pressure to pump the volume of oi it pumps (positive displacement pumps do that) so it won't change the rate, though over a billion km's you may save an oil pump. Oil volume could help, heat disappation is probably a better gain, dollars saved ever 6 months will buy to beer to consume whilst doing the work.

it's purely the economics of scale with regards to price and what they think they can sell the units for that govern the price. Make less = higher dollars per unit in machine setup etc so you pay for it and the likes of the car makers who get their own branded spares and the filter manufactures reap the profits. Why would any one filter medium be different to another when the product is the same, grades of oil may change slightly, mineral v's synthetic, but it's essentially the same thing. Especially when you consider what they are aiming to remove.

There is about 4 different thread types and of that about 2 oring sizes per thread, allow for a short and long version for each combo and that's 16 filters to cover all, you don't reckon if they could make 16 filters instead of 50 plus they would? Not to mention if a company did they would take over the market overnight with shops and workshops reducing their stock on hand significantly

Mini is another one, now listed as a Z418 (G16b filter) used to be Z78 or something and they dropped it, z9 physically fits in the space so why didnt they select it?

My point is Ryco know more about filters than all of our opinions put together, there must be a reason for keeping the listings like they are.

If you put a Z9 on, how are you going to know that a G series doesn't pump a heap more oil around so need a higher pressure bypass valve? simply you cant know if you are pumping un filtered oil around

I believe it was the RT131 Toyota Corona that used the Backfire motor NOT Nissan Pulsar...

yep it sure did. 8)

we fitted straight cut timing gears from a red motor to one that shattered the fibre/plastic timing gears, didn't quite whine like the straight cuts in my mates cammed XU1 though

Nissan Pulsar 86-90 "Vector" had the GM update of the Backfire motor rebadged also as the Holden Gastrap. The Backfire took 3 different paths around the world most kept the Starfire conrods a fave for hot holden sixes to give them one good cast part out of the whole bodgy cast lot.

The toyota Corona thats it the real Backfire lack of balls :deadhorse:

interesting, they must have made some serious changes to it. as they were non crossflow in the sunbirds/corona's with typical 202 side plates & it was a crossflow in the puss-arse with no side plates from memory... there was another grand scheme by our gumbyment, the "australian content" rule, i remember we had aussie built stereo's fitted to import lasers etc back in the day to satisfy the rules.

anyway back to oil filters, i'm in the same boat as buzbox, replace it with the recommended item.

here's a bit of a reference for you

Z418 BPV ( bypass valve setting ) = 96.5kPa or 14psi
Z9 BPV ( bypass valve setting ) = 69kPa or 10psi

well if that's not a good enough reason to be running the recommended filter, not sure what is. 8)

Z418 needs 14psi to get any oil through it, its a tight little bitch

Just did lots of start and stop and freeway stretch of 330km round trip in 2 days
start ups are a treat, less noise than usual and smooth cruising all round.
The filter was filled with oil before dry start-up and no dry noise noted compared
to filled Z418. Im not saying this is the way for everyone as in my case the Z9
sits facing downwards onto the road and my van is quite high with plenty of
clearance but I will not hesitate to run a Z9 remote setup and with the savings
of the filter invest in an Accusump setup for that extra lube round corners or
in the case of most kids here crazy road positions and unfortunate rolls

I will be very interested to see 5000kms with the Z9 and compare to the Z418
using the same oil as the Z418 in the past has always come out very heavy
and the oil quite black no matter which quality drop I used.
I do not skimp on oil quality preferring Penrite and Penzoil usually but rarely
go below 40-45 dollars for 4 litres unless on special.

Nah was family II engine, a GM euro staple thats been in every thing up to Opel Barinas

You need to research a bit more before you post dude, you are bringing just enough inaccuracies in everything you post to make the thread a waste of time

Ive got both filters in the garage, ill chop em open a bit later, but the bypass valve is already a good difference

Have a feeling your thinking about two differant engines here. The Starfire is a Holden design, basically a 173 minus two cylinders, built for Torana/Sunbirds, Commadores and local content Coronas. The early Pulsar/Vector (and many others) engine...... origionally an early 70's Opal design i believe....... was Australian built from the early 80's and fitted to Camiras and many other vehicles worldwide...in many varing forms......aka the Family II engine.

Your feeling is spot on the LE Motor it is, Camira motor in a pulsar vector

Quote:
1.9-litre Starfire motor in a 1976 LX Sunbird

The 1.9-litre (1,892 cc) powerplant, known as the Starfire engine, was effectively Holden's existing 2.85-litre 173 cu in straight-six with two cylinders removed.[3] Designed and built in Australia to satisfy local content rules, it first appeared in 1978 during the UC Sunbird's production run, replacing the Opel 1.9L cam-in-head unit used in LH, LX and earlier UC Torana/Sunbird 4-cylinder models.

Peak power output for the Starfire was 58 kilowatts (78 hp), with a 17.5 second acceleration time from 0-100 kilometres (0–62 mi) in the VC Commodore.[5] This variant's performance meant the need to push the engine hard leading to fuel consumption similar to the straight-sixes. Due to this, it was often nicknamed as Misfire or Backfire. This engine was replaced in the Australian market by the Camira's OHC Camtech unit, however it continued until 1986 in New Zealand, where it was used to power 4-cylinder versions of the VK Commodore.
