I realise that. Im happy to wear a fine. I'd be in the wrong after all with much time without problems, so yeah... call it LED bar tax lol. Ive gone my whole driving life without getting slapped with a speeding ticket or any other fine, so im not too worried if i get a fine for that. gotta do my part to keep someone employed. Glass is half full Royce

I can't believe some of the setups i seen over the long weekend, how people get away with 4, 3 or more huge spotlights up top is beyond me Atleast a lightbar looks good and can be stealthy so it doesn't stand out.

The ADR was changed a number of years ago, I believe it was due to pressure from Jeep, so they could release the kj Cherokee Renegade. Zook_Fan wrote: What I was told when I questioned a DOT inspector about roof lights was that there must be a series of switches to turn it on. It can't be on when the high beam isn't on, needs a separate switch in the cabin to turn it off and it is supposed to have another switch located somewhere that it can't activated from inside the car (under the bonnet or something). The purpose of the last switch was so you had to get out and pop the bonnet to turn the light on when you were off the road as they were not legal for on road use.
That was straight from his mouth, I've found nothing to back it up online.

I read the Vicroads regulations yesterday and they are certainly not easy to follow. My take on the situation is that an LED light on the top of the Bull Bar will probably be illegal as it restricts the drivers vision and could injure pedestrians. That is probably the same in all states. A light bar on the roof may be illegal (depending upon how the rules are interpreted) but if you put a cover over it and leave it disconnected until you are off road there will be no problem. Except of course as Christover states it will be subject to tree damage.

There must be a regulation allowing taxis etc to use work lights.

There are some exceptions in Victoria. If the lights were fitted in the factory (Jeep and FJ Cruiser) then that is OK (must have been lobbying by manufacturers I guess, and I expect the Taxi's have an exemption because they do not face forward but to the side and do not operate in conjunction with the normal lights.

Apparently if you wrap a strip of tape around the centre of a single light bar, to divide the light beam into two, it will pass.

it visually defines the light bar as 2 spot lights & therefore meets ADR's about having spot lights fitted in pairs.

If the amount of effort that is put into legislating useless shit like this, was directed towards say......I don't know.....curing cancer, this world would be a far better place. Too many rules, no common sense.

Haha a motorcycle with a 40" light bar Oh and I doubt anyone could stare at a light bar and tell it was separated by tape? Yes that is the reason for it in the ADR's. From a few k away you can't tell it's a 40" light bar, by the time they are close enough you can you know it's a car anyway. You have to be able to tell it has been separated. Quote: The width of such opaque dividing cover should be enough to distinguish the arrangement as two separate light units. For example, the ability of an observer standing 200m in front of the vehicle to perceive the light bar as two separate light units can be used as an approximate guide. So if you can't then you need more tape or can still be booked.

or maybe the ADRs weren't written with 40inch light bars in mind.
the need for headlights in pairs an appropriate space apart is fairly obvious if you think about it, and no regulation will ever be able to account for every situation and aftermarket product. If you want a light bar run one and accept the slight risk, if you vehicle is massively modified and you dont draw attention to yourself by driving like a fool then it probably wont be a problem.
if you dont want to do that then cover the bar on road.

The person who i bought my Jimny of had to remove the fuse from the spot lights on the front because they weren't wired in to the highbeams. Apparently if they 'aren't functional' and are just there as cosmetic its fine and will pass roadworthy...

Don't know about anywhere else but at my rego check all lights fitted had to work or be removed. They told me what they should knock me back on but didn't. LOL.

Attachment: LED Light Bar Standards Vsi_hv250_driving_lamps.pdf Here's the file to have a look at. Valid for QLD only, but most states will probably take up this stance on lightbars. Aurora are building some small clip on covers for their dual row and single row lightbars to deal with this.

I just attended the Rosehill camping supershow and spoke to a TJM Rep who said that ADR 13 stipulated that all fog and driving lights must be fitted in pairs... The height was open to interpretation as all its states is that they must be fitted in pairs and must be mounted on the front of the vehicle. Where the front is... is once again open to interpretation..
What I have seen recently in regards to the larger size Light bars is blanking plates fitted over the 4 centre LED's giving the appearance of Two Light bars being fitted.. Not sure if its Legit but it might be a way around it..
They are comming out with Modular Light bars so Fitting them in a way similar to round spot lights are possible... but at $179 a pop.. a bit expensive for me...

What I don't get is, they aren't supposed to be used when they could dazzle oncoming traffic, so why does it have to be distinguishable as a pair of lights @ 200m?
