Hey,.... Ive got an issue with my truck where for some reason when i try to start it... it turns over for 5-6 seconds and then finally fires and starts.... its not always at cold...and can do it anytime

Its had full service just before i purchased it with new air filter and plugs....but it feels more to me like an electrical problem, or maybe fuel pump type issue..... has anyone come across this or have any ideas where i should look ?

Ive had the truck at the auto electrician down the road and there are no error codes coming from the computer.

What do you do with the accelerator pedal when starting?

Might be worth checking your fuel pressure before start up then see what it does while running. What happens when you turn the ignition on and wait for the fuel pump relay to click off and repeat that a few times before starting?

I would like to think it's perhaps normal - quite a few of the 1.6 & 2.0 GVs I've come across do that - to the point where even my daughter has recognized it as a trait of GVs. They crank for several seconds before firing - I've stopped trying to figure it out, and been driving it as is.

To answer the questions ...

- joeblow - it doesn't matter, as long as you don't hold the pedal down (WOT whilst cranking puts the ECU in an "unflood" mode and kills the injection).
- JrZook - that also makes no difference, fuel pressure was my first suspect.

Have you ever tested that on your GV?

Thanks for all the replys people

joeblow- Usually just rest my foot on the peddle, when i was at the auto electrictians i was starting the truck arm through window and still did it.

JrZook- Thanks ill give that a crack over the next few days and see if it makes a difference

fordem- your right it is normal for these to be about 2 seconds (which is longer than the typical car) but this is more like 5-6 seconds

Rhinoman- yeah ill be giving this ago today :)

Yes I have - with an engine that is not flooded, if you hold the throttle wide open and crank, it will crank for as long as you want (throttle down, key turned to start) or until the battery dies - release the throttle and the engine will fire within 1~2 seconds.

A couple of idea's i had... firstly, what grade of fuel are you using, a low grade fuel doesnt burn very cleanly, better if you use the best grade fuel you can afford, as the zook engine likes a higher grade/octane fuel, we have 91, 95 and 98 RON/octane fuel, i always buy the 95RON... secondly, while my GV is a V6, it sometimes gets hard to start, can take up to 10secs, and can miss on one cylinder for about 30secs, i just run some good quality fuel system/injector cleaner thru when i refuel, and it goes back to starting within 2secs, and no misfire, its a simple solution that works for me, may work for you too... :D

Regardless of the fuel octane mac, if it gets the fuel it will fire up quickly and run. The ECU should be able to sync up and start controlling spark and fuel at around 2 crank rotations and may require a couple more to catch. This should all happen in a few seconds max

Yes it will, i was thinking more along the lines of how much deposits it will put on the injectors over time, and possibly clog them up a bit, standard unleaded has alot of sulphur etc in it, the better the fuel, the less sulphur/crap is in it, to leave less deposits that clog things up... just a suggestion... :D

I've been playing around over the last couple of days and found that if I turn the ignition on and wait for the click, then it starts no problems.... It seems to be when I just in, turn the key over all to quick that it does it.

That indicates that your fuel rail may be loosing pressure. Possible due one way valve in the fuel pump or the pump itself.

Thats what you should be doing, were you just turning the key straight to start?

If the pump and the rest of the fuel system is in good condition (holds pressure) you should be able to go straight to start and it should fire up pretty much straight away.

When my pump was on its way out it would take quite a bit of cranking after it sat to get it started if you didn't prime the system. Now I can leave it for days then just hit the key to fire it up.

Why? Every other car I've owned will start like that. The G13B in my Swift will fire on the first crank 99% of the time - with that all I do is turn the key to start and as soon as you hear it crank you can release the key, with the GV I have to wait for it to fire.

have you checked the back up power supply? its possible that it may be losing its settings and that could cause issues, it would also take a little longer to initialise.
