Hi guys,

I had one of my CV boots rip a little while back, so I decided to take out the CV and I fully degreased EVERYTHING on the CV, packed it with new grease that came with the brand new CV boots. After reassembling everything I get real bad clicking noises. I should mention, it WAS NOT clicking before cleaning the CVs (when there was a rip in the boot) even though there was a tonne of rocks and water in the joint itself. I should also mention that I have cleaned the CVs joints TWICE now, putting new grease on each time, the problem still persists.

Here is a video of the sounds I am getting: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j6akx3pe7zca5ey/IMG_0437.MOV

I know all signs point to 'buy new CVs' but I spent a fair bit in new boots and grease, and spent heaps of time cleaning them to perfection, yet they got worse?

I just want to know if new CVs will solve my problem completely, I don't want to spend $500 in CVs to find out its something else making the noise.

Cheers.

I've found clicky cvs are harder to break than quiet ones, I don't know why.
I would just order a new outer cv joint ($50 ebay) and keep it on the shelf to you break the clicky one.

Just watched the video. If its clicking in a straight line they're proper fucked. Just replace the outer cv.
also, be careful playing on the road in 4wd, it can bind up your transfer case.

Ahh, okay yeah, never thought of just buying the joint, ill probably replace ALL joints just to be safe. Although, one thing I should mention, I was never able to pull the outer CV joint off, I couldn't find any circlips any where and I wasn't game to hammer it off. How do I get the outer joint off?

Also, why would they start making the noise after cleaning? I really don't understand.

Edit: I forgot to mention, both the inner and outer boots were stuffed. For the inner joint I took everything apart and cleaned them out, but for the OUTER joint, since I couldn't get it a part, I just wiped excess grease off and then packed new grease in. Although the out joint didn't have any water of rocks in it, so I felt safe doing this.

The outers are held on by a 'snap ring' that sits in a groove on the spine. You cant see it without pulling it apart.
To remove it hit the star with a hammer, sometimes they come off easy but I've had to cut them off with a grinder before.

Usually the inners dont wear out/ break

I couldn't find any snap rings. I can't even see the spline because the race for the bearings is over it. Do you need to hammer the joint off? I can't find much on the net.

The inner CV was the main one that I wanted to clean out. It had the biggest tear in the boot, and it had a fair bit of water and dirt in it. It was also the only one I managed to take completely apart. The out CV had no dirt or water, so I just added new grease to the existing stuff. I have no idea how I could have gone wrong with reassembly, as there is really on 1 way for it all to go on. That's what makes me worry, what's going to be different with a new CV joint compared to a cleaned and re-greased one? There was no pits or dents in the bearings or race...
