I most definitely did not need to use a screwdriver like this: or this: ^^ I didn't remove these things at all (well I did eventually, to see if I could fit a little voltage meter in there but that was after the head unit was out). From memory, I removed the cup holder, removed all of the required screws (maybe six?) and then just gently pulled from the bottom.

also if the math is right and what I was statin in the second message surely a double DIN should fit in there right?

Yes, it will fit. As discussed (and previously pictured ) you will need to open up the fascia for the double DIN head unit. The actual cradle in behind the fascia is proper double DIN size. You may need to be inventive with the trim piece to hide the edges of the hole in the fascia. The previously pictured Alpine is the best system I've seen for hiding the cut fascia. All manufacturers are different in regards to the "trim rings" available, so it pays to shop around before deciding on a particular brand.... I installed a JVC double DIN in the wife's XL-7 recently - it's a 2004 model. PS: JVC don't have any off the shelf double DIN trim rings ( I found that out after I bought it! )

turns out Christmas bought around some unexpected bills!! however I've since been to autobarn again and then I've wanted to look at the music wall (that holds the head unit we want) basically they said, no touchy wall turn aroundy.. you buy the unit if it don't fit stiff.... was really unimpressed with this, so attempted to track down someone with the same device. no luck so far but as I said we've had other bills pop up! if it fits though i'll be advising people that's for sure such a faff around just for a rear camera display / GPS navigation lol

Double din definitely fits, there is heaps of space behind. The one I fitted was 180mm deep.

I should also mention the factory cage fits the Chinese double din units & the steering wheel controls work too.

Have you only just found google too Murcod? Yeah I think most know the overseas models came out with double din fascia's for the the later updated gv. Its a shame there isn't a cheap aftermarket one.

Its a shame there isn't a cheap aftermarket one. I've never seen it mentioned anywhere previously - in any double DIN XL-7 thread (and I've read a few on various forums.) It appears to be only those two models that have the proper double DIN fascia - the rest seem to have the type that came in the Aussie models with the slightly smaller cutout/ silly rounded corners. Anyone know where the part number could be found? There are sites that will sell you Jap car parts - if you know the part number..... PS: A few of the Escudo's with the double DIN unit seem to have made their way to NZ.

Anything here look familiar? Perhaps 09409-08326? http://suzuki.epcdata.ru/escudo/191_tx92w-4/interior/731/That's the clip. It'd be 73821A if anything.

I'll be living with mine "as is". It looks fine, but the proper factory panel would have been nice and saved many hours of customisation. Here's what looks like (JVC head unit fitted with modified Kenwood double DIN trim ring): Attachment: IMAG1704 (Small).jpg Attachment: IMAG1703 (Small).jpg

Could be dirty contacts on the steering slip ring (clock spring), as far as I can tell this is a resistive control. Try snipping the thin orange and pink wires behind the stereo to see if it fixes it. You are going to have to cut them anyway if you fit a new one. I fitted a Chinese 2 din Andriod unit I'll PM you a link when I find it, they are pretty much all the same.

The Android OS boots in less than 30 seconds. If the radio was in use when the unit was powered down, it will start to play instantly while it boots on start up. The reverse cam also works without waiting for the system to start. Pretty happy with it, the only problem has been the voice guideance doesn't work on the pre-installed igo app, which I read is a common fixable software issue.

I've noticed a couple that run Windows CE as well as Android - I'm guessing that type would boot up quicker? I can highly recommend the Sygic GPS app for Android- it will cost around AUS$30 but updates are free. I've got it on my phone and it is soooo much better than my 2010 vintage Kenwood double DIN head unit with built in Garmin GPS. PS: Out of interest the Kenwood boots up a lot quicker than 30 seconds - it would be more like 5-10seconds for full functionality.
