I've been taking my Sierra on the beach lately and have been struggling going up hills, and other sierras zoom strait past me, I was wondering what tyres are best on the beach and what tyre pressure

What size tyres do you currently have? Ats? Muddys? Road tyres? What pressure are you currently running?

The best tyres are one with fuck all air in them. I run 6-8 psi in my jimny

AT's @ 10psi, then if you still struggle, deflate to 8-6psi

My muddies suck in sand... but they only suck slightly more than ATs and are nowhere near getting me bogged - they just tend to want to dig a bit more when initially taking off - which could easily be negated by lowering pressures a few PSI more. The benefits in almost every other terrain far outweigh that slight disadvantage in my view.

http://www.sandtiresunlimited.com/sandtire1.html^ any of them. lol i've used both Highway terrain, All Terrain, Mud Terrain tires on our beaches and on Stockton beach, and hands down the A/T's were the most fun, the M/T's didnt' bog down like everyone things because we aired them down even more but they just didn't seem to handle the bends so well when aired down, guess it's because the sidewall is stiff? but when aired down they roll around alot more, we START at about 16PSI and then go from there, if other vehicles are zooming past you check your tires however also we found out that alot of the time we were in the wrong gear / ratio for the vehicle. eg: we wer in Low when we should have been in High however as more people have suggested. more infor will give a more better answer

If you have larger than standard tires, fit reduction to correct the gearing back to standard (or slightly further) If you dont want to, fit standard sized tires, or put up with the slow. As has been stated, fuck all pressure tires are the best tires. I drive around in high no worries with low pressure. If I dont air down it struggles in the soft stuff in second. Cant imagine soft stuff plus hills without airing down. My car has mud tires and the stock engine.

Sand sucks HP, they bog down and get stuck. Viola! they blame the muddies because the stock sized ATs that came with the car performed great in the same situation. JM.02

I run 6-8 psi in my jimny ^^^ this guy knows where it's at. we had a good chuckle at the Nat Parks signs at the start of their sand sections stating recommended tyre pressures of 15-20psi, no wonder everyone gets bogged down there. pretty sure we had all cars at 10spi or less... 2 d22 navara's, 2 GQ's & 4 different flavours of zooks... 15 4wds & none of us got properly stuck & we dakar'd around 200kms of some of the best dune driving in oz.

i have the BFG km2's in 30x9.5 and can climb some wicked sand dunes when their at 10psi, and their a MT. at's should be better then the MT's but i wouldnt get them unless i actually had a highway to drive on that wasn't made of dirt.

sand paddles work well because the throw the sand letting you put more powah down at a guess.
by rights if the sands soft enough to fill the void between the blocks on the mt tread then you have more surface area then a AT i would have thouht.
i assumed the mt<at on sand was a tried and true think, but the harder i look the more elusive a propper comparison is. would love to run the front left and rear right AT and the front right rear left MT at the same pressures and see shich wheels allow the car to get crossed up first.

mud tyres use the same principal behind sand paddles... i think the key word here is paddle.  but i guess most on here being in athsmatic 1.3 suzuki's, they're yet to experience powah.

Just throw this into the mix directional muddies suck in sand. Old claws, new claws, pro comp extremes, silver stone extremes etc... They are all muddies which suck in the sand I think that's where the common term "muddies suck in the sand" comes from and why people think ATs are better for sand Highway tyres suck in the sand. They don't dig, they just spin until you slowly start to move Jezza, where the are sand dunes in Gove?

Which beach, which zook, what tyres and pressures?
On soft sand (ie: Belmont beach) I'll run 5psi. Harder sand (ie: Anna bay) I'll run 10psi+ without dramas.
Tyres are silverstone xtreme 33's or cheapo AT 31's.

I used standard sized road tyres on sand, drove all over moreton, stradbroke and bribie island and had no worries.
I haven't ever let it down below about 12psi. Could go down lower, but it went just fine at that pressure. There is no right or wrong pressure, its just a matter of experimenting on the day. Start at 15 or so and see how it goes. I generally let a bit out, drive a bit, take a bit more out, drive a bit further, and all of a sudden you notice it MUCH easier on the engine, the car sort of glides across the sand as opposed to trying to churn through it.
I don't have a pump, so i try not to let more air out than i need to, so i can still drive to the servo to get air (which are generally close to the beaches where i go)

Any tyre will work but the more aggressive treads (mud up to paddle) will need more power than a highway terrain.

There is also a changeover point where you can get the tyre up onto the surface - kind of like getting a boat up onto the plane. That's how paddles work and it takes power

^^^ that's exactly how i describe it... getting it up on the plane & it can't take too much power if i can get mine to do it day in day out with 100kw. usually all it takes is a slight roll off the throttle once moving for it to climb up out of the sand & onto it & then you can get back on it & roost like a mofo.

I mentioned power more in reference to paddles Atari. Paddles always get a mention in relation to the ultimate sand tyres but that's like saying a 54" bogger is the ultimate mud tyre - it might be, but not for a Sierra.

According to legend Highway tyres with very little air are supposed to be the best choice for sand work.
1. Highway tyres have a softer side wall then a Mud terrain tyre allowing a larger foot print when aired down.
2. The non aggressive tread allows the tyre to float over the grainy surface meaning less chance of rolling when taking a corner at speed. (meaning you wont turn at all in some cases)
3. When you do loose traction the non aggressive tread means when you do bog down.. Your not resting on the chassis rails as the tyres hardly flick up any sand.
Thats just according to the wise words of those who have been found to hide on the internet.
Which I find hard to believe when Sand paddles are anything but non aggressive..
