I have an 84 sierra (narrow track) with 970 cc engine I use around the farm. Last week the head gasket went and it is now sitting in the shed waiting to have the engine lifted out, the plan was to strip and clean it check bearings etc and put it back togeather with new gaskets etc. However my son rang me at work telling me there was a 1.3 with gearbox on ebay for a $105 finishing in 48 seconds so it now transpires I have a 1.3 to put in the zook and I have a few questions. Here a couple to get the ball rolling.

Will the 1.3 bolt up to the existing 4 speed gearbox?

Is the 5 sp a straight bolt on to the 970's transfer case ?

No, the 1.3 won't bolt up to the 1.0 gearbox.

No, the 5 spd isn't a straight bolt on to the 1.0 transfer, but.....

If your Sierra is an 84, this is the cross over date between a Type 2 (metal dash) and Type 3 (plastic dash).

If your Sierra has a metal dash you will need to do the following to fit the 1.3 and 5spd:
1. Fabricate new chassis mounts for the engine.
2. panel beat the transmission tunnel to fit the wider gearbox.
3. make rear gearbox support mount.
4. make a new shorter jackshaft between the gearbox and transfer.

If your Sierra has a plastic dash:
1. your RH chassis engine mount may have 3 holes to permit the bolt-in fit of the 1.3.
2. If not, you will need to drill 1 hole to fit 1.3.
3. Trans tunnel is wide enough for 5 spd.
4. Use a 1.3 jackshaft between the GB and TC. An early 1.3 jackshaft will have the same flange bolt pattern as your transfer case flange, a later WT Sierra is different, but you can fit the yoke off your 1.0 jackshaft to the 1.3 shaft, or the flange off a WT transfer to your 1.0 transfer.

You'll need to bridge the external regulator too, and I'm pretty sure use the 1.3 coil without ballast resistor.

Even though it's a farm car, I'd do it properly, type three 1.0 tray backs are quite sought after.

Progress has been slow on thes due to lfe getting in the way . . .

I have the 1litre engine & box out and have found the following . The jack shaft from the 1lt fits on the 1.3 box , the lenght of the 4 sp & 5 sp are the same so the shaft should work and the rear gearbox mount is the same .although I have 3 bolt holes on the chasis for enginhe mounts It looks as if they wont line up by a couple of inches I guess I'll find out when I drop it in .
