Ok so a mate and i did this the other day, we read quite a few things that were wrong about this conversion so this is required
Things needed..
Mg410 4 speed box
1300 sierra 5 speed
tools and a press (may not need press but made life easy)

how to do it

Pull both extension housings off and separate both gearbox's
pull both gear sets out (may need press)
then put the 1ltr input shaft onto the 1300 gear set and put the gear set back into the 1ltr housing.
then punch the roll pins out of the selector forks in the 1ltr gearbox, slide them out (mind the detent balls) and put them aside. do the same for the 1300 rails.
then put the 1300 rails into the 1ltr housings, be mindful to get them back right and get the detent balls back in.
put the top back on the gearbox, be mindful to line up the shifter forks with the selector rings in the box, then put the 1300 extention housing on, place a shifter in and see if you have all your gears and it shifts!
if it works, pull box back apart, add silicon, bolt back up and your done.

Note..
this gives you better ratio's and a 5 speed
you need to use the 1300 extension housing as the rails are longer and there is no prevision for the 5th gear bearing in the 1ltr housing

Hopefully this helps.

How is the 5 speed conversion going? Do you know if this will fit in the LJ80? Do you have any pics you could share with us?

Thanks for any help

The gearbox fits in the tunnel but you'l have to chop out the trans crossmember and make a new one. Also need to chop a hole in the floor for the shifter and get a custom length jackshaft made.

Thanks for any help.

They're quite rare. It took me years to find one, that's partially because I live in the middle of nowhere though.

Does anyone know why we need to use the mg410 4 speed and not say the lj80 4 speed to do the conversion?

The MG410 gearbox (you can also use the gearbox from a type 3 1l, but that's the rarest sierra around) is essentially the same as the 1.3l 5 speed gearbox, but with a different bellhousing pattern and a 4 speed gearset.

The LJ gearbox is totally different in every way, it's much smaller too.

Are you running transfer gears as well? I've got the two boxes sitting here doing nothing, but I'm about to put 6.5:1 gears in. Just wondering how low that 1st will be then and if it would in turn make 5th usable. Diffs are 4.1:1 and tyres are 31.

Only the type 3 sj410's. These are cars with the plastic NT1.3 type dashboard.

Is the output spline that comes out of gear box the same on the two cars or do you have to get a 1300 output shaft?

Not 100% sure.
Mine was a mg410 so it fit straight up.
Im about to pull this box out to make way for a 1.6 if anyone is looking for one.
