My LWB Vitara is better all round on the 30 x 9.5's than it was on 31 x 10'.5's, both on and off road,
except for the minor loss of ground clearance of course.
A tall 9.5 will be my next set of treads. (possibly on 16's)

Speaking of 235/85s

I'm looking at this size for my ute but keep getting put off by the stupidly high load ratings.
Some Goodyear MTR Kevlars have come up for sale, How good/bad will they be?

IIRC the Pirelli Scorpion MT has quite a low load rating for a 235/85, old school pattern though. Might even not make them anymore?

As per my edit in last post, They are the old pattern MT/Rs and based on pics they have a load rating code of 114 (1180kg) vs the 120 (1400kg) of the new style.

4.5 is too narrow. You'll really want a 6" rim.

Don't worry about what I can fit under an actual Jimny, just the 5.5 rim.

34 9.5 15 swamper is the tallest tyre I can think of to run on a 5.5" rim.

Yes there are legal rim limits. The tyre manufacturer website will Provide the acceptable range.

No idea if there's a 245 80- never seen one. 235 85 16 would be almost identical in size and very common.

My new truck runs 245 70 16 (750mm) as standard and I looking for AT tyre options that are not gearing killers/cop bait/insurance voiding. 235 85 too would be my choice but they all measure about 810mm.
Something in the 780 to 800 diameter range would be ideal but there does not seem to be anything without running much wider tyres like 265's.

Might just have to run stock tyres as a daily and get some oversized weekenders.

Yep, but only approx 12mm extra clearance under the pumpkin over stock tyres. Hardly seems worth it. Then again 780mm is only 15mm extra...

Well, see, my calcs said 235/85's are actually 806mm, but you wanted UNDER, so I didn't bother pointing that out. But, if you allow for the fact that the tyres loaded radius is less than half the unloaded diameter, you'll be under your 2 inches anyways....

Tyres are only ever flat on the bottom. Just roll the flat side to the top...

Thanks for your suggestion, 1DYX. I wasn't trying to be dismissive and, to be honest, that is probably the option I will end up with when replacing the current ones.

I personally feel the 235/85's are just a fraction to big to live with daily from a liability and legal standpoint but I would have no qualms having a weekend set of tyres this large. My quest has been to find the largest, narrowest 16" tyre with an unloaded diameter of less than 800.
For 235/85 the calcs say 806 but some tyres such as the MickeyT ATZ P3 are stated as 812, another at 810. Others are as small as 806.
There seems to be a lack of tyres approaching 800mm in the 235 or 245 width in both 15 and 16 inch. 255's are practically non existent. 265 is getting too wide.

With the stock tyres on there is a piddling 215mm under the diff. Air down for off road and I have as much diff clearance as a Jimny. It stands to reason that an equally loaded 800mm tyre will give more or less a 25mm height increase on a loaded 750mm tyre.

i'd be stressing less about the diff clearance and just buy the tyre that is the best size to suit your rig and intended overall use
