well just finished putting the G16B in the jimny but it won't start.

turns over but doesn't seem to spark at all. i've disconnected & reconnected every wire i can, i've double checked that i've used every wire but it totally has me stuffed.

can any one please help me out by giving me a rundown on what to check ? for the meantime i'll be using the search function & google as there's nothing more i can do out at the car.

Gday Graphicx
i recently had the exact same prob when i put the fresh g16b motor in my vitara.
turned out to be an earth wire that bolted to back of the intake plenum was not connected.
dont know if this applies in your case, but putting it back on, after i found it, fixed mine.

thanks redvit, i'll double check all the earths, i know i definitely have the earth wires at the front on the intake manifold & the little earth going to the cam sensor, but i don't know of any others that i may have missed but will check again tonight (really thought there would've been a thick earth from the battery to the block or similar but i haven't seen one).

Hi mate,

There should be an earth cable that runs from the battery down the firewall then out alongside the fuel lines to a starter motor bolt. I know this as I have just upgraded all my battery cabling :D

does it look pretty well like the ring is out 180 degrees to you guys ? the little diagram is from the workshop manual.

Did you pry that off and press onto the baleno or swap in the jimny cam shaft?

Turn motor to other tdc and it will be alligned.
But check the valve position to see what stroke it is in.

yeah we pried it off & fitted to the baleno cam shaft.

last night we took it off the cam again & refitted it 180 degrees around, still didn't fire. i think now my only option is a multimeter & chasing back down the connectors/sensors unless someone has another idea :'(

ok, car is running really great. was the position of the cam ring as first suspected. from what my mate said the cam on the G16B is in the wrong position, whoever put the timing belt on must've installed it with #4 on TDC & not #1 (????), as a result his lining up on the cam was out. all his marks were still there so after identifying that he popped it on & off it went =)

all the same thanks for your help ray & jdk.

#4 & #1 are at TDC at the same time - all TDC means is that the piston is at the top of it's stroke.

yeah but wouldn't one be TDC compression & the other TDC exhaust ? i think that's where the issue was as the cam was exhaust for #1 instead of compression as it should have been in that position. honestly not sure, i understand how timing works, but i just never fiddle with it.

Yes

Did you guys check the FSM?

The suzuki timing indicators confuse a lot of people.
If the g16b was running after previous person did the timing belt, it's your friends mistake.

How have you gone getting the timing right?
Did you need to swap resistors?

Regarding prying them off and refitting it, I did it once and it was totally not worth the effort.
I would only do it, if the jimny cam wasnt worth using, or needed to be ground etc.

In an attempt to make things easier, it's opened the door for a lot more hassles and in this case it caused you to lose a few days of work.
As per the extra ponies and torques, I dont even know how measurable the difference between cams is from a driving perspective.

what's the FSM ?

yeah the G16B was from a running car that had been written off.

i haven't used a timing light on it yet to see where the timing is sitting, have located the resistor & printed out all the info on altering the timing with it thanks to rhinoman so that's a project for a weekend (along with fixing that metal flywheel cover).

i was wishing i had just swapped cams in the end, it didn't seem like such a hassle at first but having done it i was pulling my hair out as you know. my old cam is fine so would've been good to use.

FSM factory service manual (workshop manual im guessing)

People on the forum have timing related problems all the time.
It's very common to get it wrong.

I think jimbo jones is the only one who attempted and is still keen on swapping the timing cogs.
Do everyone a favour and in the g16b install thread, let others know how much it sucked to swap the cog (I think if it becomes a common practice, this type of thread will become more common)

Congratulations on getting it done.
I bet it feels good to have solved the problem

were checking the FSM, the ring is now in a completely different position to where it states it needs to be in the manual (result of the cam being out i'm guessing).

will jump in that thread now & hammer on about just swapping cams, would've been much quicker & more reliable for me that's for sure.
