$400 odd for 2 ring and pinions? even if they are stronger, could get 4 4.625 for that

Okay, divergence of opinion here...

I have no personal experience with the Low Range 4.625 ring and pinion.

However - I have not heard of anyone complaining about the strength of the 4.625s in a SJ413/Samurai/WT Sierra/Maruti Gypsy.

I HAVE heard (and seen!) a lot of broken aluminum front differential housings containing 4.625 and 5.12s. I can't think of a single instance where the damage was caused by the gears themselves. Usually the damage is done by over-stressing the aluminum housing by contact with foreign objects (rocks and boulders) or violent torque loads from big tyres and excessive throttle use. I can't recall a situation where teeth have gone missing under extreme loading. Gear damage has happened. I just can't attribute it specifically to Vitara ring and pinions - just to violent loading. Naturally, damage to steel housings with Vitara gears is much rarer.

Tanshi may be - and actually probably is - quite correct about the overall strength of the LowRange 4.5 gears. They would certainly be a choice for a competition vehicle. However that strength comes at a higher price compared to good 'ol salvage-yard 4.625s if all you are doing is driving around on bush tracks or on the beach.

It depends on what you want to do with that Gypsy... I have a set of 4.625s installed on my Samurai with heavy 30-inch BF Goodrich All Terrains, stock transfer box gears and a 1.6 8-valve. For over 6 years, it has been a good overall match for highway driving and off-roading.

I hope that this helps!

Tanshi would know.
Dank had a great run out of his 4.57 gears from lowrange.

Heavy 30" bfg's? Are they full of water? We're basing our durability calls on 33-35" tyres.

We destroyed 3 in 6 months at one point before buying the lowrange ones.

haven't broken one since. IN the end if you can get them they will probably do what you want them to, it was merely a suggestion based on my experience.

i will be running my 34's twin locked with chromoly axles and cv's with 4.16 transfer and 1.6 8V was going to go 5.12 but i think 4.625 will be suited well enough for driving to the bush and in the bush :)
