If the engine is running you'll not be sucking anything in through the exhaust - not air, and not water. I've repeatedly driven through water over the exhaust level, including backwards, to avoid swamping the ignition system, on a vehicle with a transverse engine and the plugs facing forwards.

I'd also suggest that next time you get water in the intake, you pull the plugs before cranking it over - if you had gotten water in the cylinders on the occasion mentioned, cranking the engine would have hydrolocked it.

My assessment is that a snorkel can help reduce dust intake somewhat but the Donaldson pre-cleaner on top of the snorkel is the real way to cut down on dust in your air filter. They work very well. That is my experience with the Jimny.

My experience with my Land Rover Discovery which has the air intake just above and behind the front wheel is that a snorkel (or raised air intake) is pretty much essential. I had a to vacuum an unbelievable amount of sand and dirt from my air box (thankfully the air filter is huge and nothing got beyond it). So it does depend a lot on where the original air intake is located. I really don't know what Land Rover were thinking!
