Hi I've got a 1994 manual swb vitara. The motor needs replacing and just wondering what motors will fit in without much modifying. It has a g16b 16v efi and knowing it will be hard to find a good one I can get a g16a cheap but not sure if it will bolt straight in. Help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

Downgrading to a g16a sounds like a bad idea. It will be just as hard to find a good one and they produce less power. A g16a will bolt to your gearbox without issue but you have to ditch all the EFI system for a carby setup, your fuel system wont work with it etc.

Keep searching for a good g16b. When I was looking there seemed to be heaps sitting on wreckers shelves. Phone around.

The g16a is a 16v efi jap import. So far only been google searching as I'm sure most places will be shutting up for Xmas but will ring wreckers in the new year. Thanks for the advice watermouse

I got my G16A efi import from http://www.enginesplus.com.au/Suzuki.htm
Lot cheaper if you buy an east west front drive engine, and use your parts from the dead donk on it.
But also much easier to buy a Vitara north south engine, though they cost more and can be older than the Swift/Barinas.

Yep early 16v g16's are 'a' motors and have a bunch of small differences.

On a similar line, i have just purchased a 93 vitara with an extra vent hole in side of the block. can a baleno gtx engine repower this vehicle. original is G16a carby so it will be changed to efi and i accept that this will be bit of work to do but that is ok. without looking at the donor yet i think it is a 1.8 but the person on the other end of the phone could not get to the car to read the id plate. this is my first go at a suzi project.

The Baleno GTX motor is a J18. It's a completely different series of motor, and if you want to run a J motor, the easiest option is a J20 from a late model SWB vitara or early GV.

The easiest swap is to a G16B (EFI) but you'll really want a whole donor car to do the swap ( motor, loom, fuel tank, dash cluster, ECU etc)

Th J20 swap is much harder as the J motors were only used in cars with a wider chassis, larger radiator, and a completely different dash cluster etc. It would be a very involved conversion.

Of course anything is possible, but my rule of thumb is that there's never any point converting a car to end up with the same car you can buy from suzuki. (i.e SWB vitaras are available with either the G16B or J20 from he factory, and buying a whole car will likely be cheaper than the conversion cost.)

getting a complete good running car with G16b injected so i will have all the bits and the rest will be wing it and see

Probably easier to get the good running G16B car up to scratch using parts from the carby car rather than pull all the mechanical parts from the EFI car over to the carby car.

Bear in mind there are legalities to contend with (It's a conversion which adds power, therefore a blue plate will be required) along with the labour.
