The SRL isn't in the size I'm looking for (225/75R16).

I can get BFG Continental Michelins Goodyear Dunlop Hankooks and Kumho all at cost price.

Fair amount of highway use, moderate off-roading, but tbh, I want something that looks the biz, handles offroad, and also won't get my killed heading to CBD or going for a drive to the coast.

Any suggestions?

And I don't know why, but the coopers just do it for me, look the biz, awesome technology, and not made in asia!!

Edit: Best tyre review i've read

I just bolted KM2s on my Sierra. So far so good! They grip pretty well to.

Winter is coming, and I've just got a new job with weekends back Armsup the GV will be getting tires and new job means its also not going to be a daily for a little while Armsup Armsup

I'm after a reasonably aggressive mud tire that still lets me drive the 3hours+ up to the high country.

Current options are...
$150ish cumforcer/federal/powertrac/whatever is on special that has been most recently imported.
Or
$300ish KM2/Dynapro MT/safari TSR (are these really almost twice the tire the cheap ones are?)

Still unsure which way to go.

I also haven't decided on sizing, 245/75/16 will fit easy enough, but is a little wider than I'd like.
215/85/16 I think is perfect, but don't seem to be on anyone's website as being brought in to the country.
235/85/16 Likely too big just from an axle strength vs my laziness to be constantly working on it.

What are peoples thoughts?

245/75/16 seems to ad a premium. $260 is the cheapest I can find locally for a km2 and $295 for KM3.

Thanks, good to know.

Seriously tempted by them for no other reason than they look cool.

Got BFG km2 in 245/75R16 on my SQ625 GV.
Daily driven & run nicely for a M/T.
245 fit with a bit of work. Chassis rub at the back of the front wheels on lock is an issue.
I don't have lots of lift in mine & had to stuff around with both front & rear wheel arches.
Like you, I think a 215/85R16 would be the best fit, but a rare size in a M/T.

Hey there big brains, going through the steps of getting brakes engineered and was shocked that the engineer said that it was impossible to ever get a wheel certified if it was more than 50mm larger. From reading the VSB I'm shocked to see that maybe he was right, but I'm still in denial. Anybody have any more insight, should I look for another engineer or he was right?

And tying into that, what was the largest factory tyre for an SJ80?

I feel like somebody said that we might be able to get our base height from the largest tyre fitted to our axle / spindle ?

The largest factory tyre on an SJ80 is what they were delivered with locally. 26"

No, you can't get over a 7" rim engineered on a Sierra, not would you want to - no tyre that requires an 8" rim could be engineered on a Sierra, and no tyre that requires an 8" rim will really work effectively anyway.

You might be able to cheat another inch of tyre diameter in the front because the SJ80 uses the spindle and bearing from a Vitara, and if you can convince the engineer that the rear wheel bearing is the same as those used on a Sierra with 16" rims, that will give you a bit of leeway in the rear.

It won't increase permissible rim width, because the widest Sierra rim was only ever 5"

Am I crazy for wanting to run a 215/85r16 LT on my NGV such as these, they're a good size (30.4/8.5r16) but are a true LT construction.

I ran 215/80R15's on the Jimny and loved them, however they were a true SL rated tire and very light all terrain. They deformed awesome over rocks and almost tok capable in sand

28.6” vs 30.4” or 46mm taller than stock, they’re the largest diameter that will fit. It’s a skinny version of the 245/75r16 that everyone runs

I would expect a 215/80 to outperform a 245 in most off road situations. Interestingly when I joined the Vic suzuki club in 1993, there were a couple of kiwis in the club that swore by 215 80, and ran them on their big cars. I’d never seen them up to that point and have basically never seen them since. Good find though, assuming you can get the construction/tread pattern you’re looking for.

This is the specs on the Toyo Open Country, my only concern is the load rating & all of the tyres in that size have a huge load rating.

Diameter : 30.4”
Width : 8.5”
Rim Range : 5.5-7”
Measured Rim : 6”
Tread Depth : 15.8/32”
Load Range : E - 10 ply
Max Load : 2680/2470 lbs
Max psi : 80 psi
Max Speed : 99 mph
Weight : 39 lbs

This is where I get confused, the low profile 235/60r18 cross terrains are XL rated & have a max load of 2150lbs.

Surely the 215/85r16 with a load rating of 2460lb won’t be Much worse than the rubber bands that are currently on it.

Toyo seem obsessed with long life though, so they seem to make their tyres from carbonite.

Even the Goodyear duratrac in 215/85r16 have a high load rating & the E-10 ply rating.

Looking at all the options in that size they all have the E-10 ply rating & high load ratings

This size, while I think ideal for a Suzuki application, is rare in the Aust. market. Much more common in the USA - even a factory size on some mid-size SUVs (well, it was when I researched these things years ago).
Because they are on these mid-size SUVs, the load rating reflects the much heavier than Suzuki weights they might be called on to support.
So while size is good, availibility / range is poor & carcass weight / ply rating is high.
Which is why I run 245/75R16 - same O.D but a little wider, but then my car is a heavy arse GV SQ625.

I don’t like the way my NGV drives on a 235/60r18 vs the stock 225/60r18 & going up to a 245 seems counterproductive. I have no issues importing tyres. My current 235/60r18 cross terrains came out of the states due to lack of available options here.

The two things i dont like about them are the stiffness and the extra weight. When i searched for my tall and skinny's i managed to find SL rating (despite actully being able to carry more than the LT equivalent) that was light and deformed amazing. With the non agressive AT pattern I ran the the sipping a ability to deform is what made the tire capable.

Problem is in the size you want they will all be hard as rock with a lot of plys as they are tires designed for the duel real wheel 1 ton trucks in the states.

Going down to a 16 inch wheel shohld help a lot as there is a lot more side wall to move around so less will be transfered tonthe sterring. Even in tge same thickness

I've been cross referencing the shit out of tyre specs the last couple of days, and I don't think it's going to be as bad as everyone make it out to be.

As an example I was checking the specs above to a BFG Ko2 in a 245/75r16 & the Ko2 in the common maximum size that people put on NGV's has higher load rating & the same ply rating as the 215/85r16, the 245/75r16 weighs 21.9 kg vs 17kgs for the 215/85r16.

Diameter : 30.4"
Width : 9.8"
Rim Range : 6.5-8"
Measured Rim : 7"
Tread Depth : 15/32"
Load Range : E - 10 ply
Max Load : 3042/2778 lbs
Max psi : 80 psi
Max Speed : 112 mph
Weight : 48.4 lbs

The Ko2 only come in one spec in 245/75r16
LT245/75R16
120/116S E RWL
