Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone had a clear pic/s of the gap that an ARB sierra bull bar creates when mounted to a coily (no lift etc)?

Weighing up the few options available and trying to decide on the most viable/practical/best looking option.

So far i've contacted formula offroad but for them to make a custom job they quoted over $2k and informed me that it wouldn't be winch compatible

I'd prefer to spend less than $1500 and have the ability to mount a winch and some spotties down the track if possible.

For $1500, go down to your local welder/boily and get them to knock something up, I'm sure it would work out less then that.

NO.

A "custom" bar that was anywhere near the quality of an ARB bar would cost far more than than $1500. I wouldn't do it for under $2500 because it's going to take about 4 days of my time, plus materials, consumables, shotpeening, powder coating etc.

I've seen stuff made by people who think they are welders/boily's. Nothing against them, but they're not stylists, nor do they necessarily understand engineering.

Building front bars that look good and take a winch is murder.

Buy an ARB bar and live with the gap.

Still cheaper to buy an ARB bar, weld in the 2 gaps with some steel and get it blasted and re-powdercoated.

Or make up some sort of cover plates for the gap...

Thanks for the feedback guys,

I was leaning heavily towards the ARB bar as i'd prefer something quality. I often trek solo into the state forests and they can be a bit sketchy conditions wise after a bout of bad weather so the ability to do a possible self recovery would be most beneficial.

I didn't think the gap would be that substantial but was just hoping someone might have a pic of the ARB installed so i could assure myself id be happy with how it looks (though functionality is of more importance).

Hi, back in the day I bolted my SJ70 leafy ARB winch bar straight on to my SJ80 coily & simply trimmed (notched) two small sections of the body work below the grille where the bar uprights hit. It worked perfectly, looked great & the bar was mounted to the chassis as intended. My local 4x4 workshop wanted to use brackets & drop the bar down 2 inches, i thought this was a really poor idea, glad I didn’t listen!

P.s. Reinforce the mounting points by welding steel plates to the chassis & use the highest grade steel bolts available. If cutting the outer mounts off for tyre clearance make new outer mounts, don’t rely on just the inner chassis rail mounts! My SJ70 sustained quite a lot of damage after cutting the outers & (surprisingly easily) ripping the bar clean off! Good luck & keep those great little SJ's off their roof's & on the road!

I chopped a bit of the uprights off mine to clear the front clip.
