Hi all

My 1998 2.0 Vitara occasionally turns on the check engine light. After a while it turns off again.
I have had it looked at be various mechanics and the result has always been "no idea maybe replace the O2 sensors" which they then tell me will cost $lots.

Anyone actually know what is going on here?

Had same problem with my 97 2.0L replaced O2 sensor problem fixed.

sounds to me like the 1/2 inch square of duct tape has fallen off the dash screen ... ...

Find a mechanic with a scanner that supports the SDL protocol - the cause of the check engine light is stored in the ECU memory and can be read by a compatible scanner, even after the light turns off, until the ECU is reset by disconnecting the battery.

Or find a paper clip, jam it in the connector under the bonnet to get the MIL to flash the code. Cost: 1 cent: Time 2 minutes


Will almost certainly be O2 sensor.
I don't think i paid more than$170 for the one I replaced in my GV

If I recall correctly, the paper clip method won't pull the historic codes - no harm in trying it though.

RockAuto will not list parts for a 98 Suzuki Vitara - their current focus is the North America markets and the Vitara was not available there in 98. Assuming that they can do a VIN lookup, which I suspect will fail because an Australian VIN does not follow the US VIN requirements (it typically returns an invalid VIN error), it will simply point them to a vehicle which is not listed in their catalogue.

Please also be aware that sourcing parts for "non-US" models in the US is not as simple as matching the model, year & engine size - different markets had different models offered with different engine options, introduced in different years and US models would have had to meet US emission requirements, which for the 98 model year, would have been unique to the US market - EFI systems & sensors are different.

This does not mean that parts cannot be sourced from the US, just that the onus is on you to ensure you're choosing the correct part, the US vendors will either tell you they don't have it, based on what they see in the computer, or sell you what the computer shows them.

Us don't have the gv 2L 2004, but they were able to get me coil packs. A fraction of the price of anyone here.
