Driving down the road this morning and got up to about 45km/h and the speedo shot up to 200km/h and the cluster started making a horrible grinding noise. It does it every time I go over 40km/h.
96 lwb v6 Vitara.
I'm stumped and have no idea can anyone help please?

They're cable driven yea? If so it's likely the cable is on its way out.

If not, don't mind me.

Based on previous experience with cable driven speedometers, I'd say the speedometer itself is the issue.

Take the cluster out and spin the speedometer up with a variable speed power drill.

Just pulled my cluster out and the speedo cable slipped straight out could my problem be the cable not being seated correctly?

So I got the cluster back in after a lot of grazed skin and even more choice words and the speedo seems to be working OK now.
Also I found another way to get to the cluster without going through the speaker hole. I removed the stereo and moved the heater controls to the right and had just enough room to reach up behind the cluster to plug in the speedo cable. Not saying its the easiest way but its an option for those of us that don't have tiny hands
