So our new GTi engine has stopped and wont turn over... I think this plug may need replacing and then it will all be good again...or is that just wishful thinking... LOL....

So we went and picked up a replacement engine today thanks to the generosity of a couple of members on redline gti club.. This engine loos a bit grubby but it runs well and a warm compression test shows all 4 between 230 and 240 psi... and cold they were 215-225...so I am happy with that.. Apparently 240 is about as good as they get.. It has had all the conversion stuff added this evening and we will degrease it and pressure clean it while it hangs on the engine crane and is easy to get to..

New engine has 5 exhaust studs missing....or are they supposed to be bolts... My thoughts are to take the studs out of old wrecked head and locktighting them into the new engine....Thoughts ?????

Just an update.. This is how the other gti engine ended up...









General opinion is it had a seized valve that freed up after a couple of drives but by then impact with the piston had probably damaged it and the valve head then simply snapped off and fell into the cylinder and totally destroyed the engine...To be fair it had sat in the garage for 5 months while we waited for the right time to do the conversion. The engine seller offered a fully rebuilt engine for $1500 instead of the normal $1700...

Is that the going rate for those engines, I never knew they were so expensive.
Just realised it was for a rebuild..... good luck with that.

The new new one was $500 for the complete engine without exhaust.. We have new extractors already.. The original one was $650 for engine complete with loom extractors, coil, 90degree dizzy cap..just a shame it only lasted a week........To have the gti loom converted to Sierra was $400.. So far with 2 engines it has been about $1800...
The new one is coming together well. I put a new timing belt on it today. The rocker cover is off to be sand blasted tomorrow at the place my son works at. It will be the same color as the pulleys and we will fit it once all is in the car and running.. Should be in and running tomorrow..

Whose "general opinion" is this?
Seen a lot of valves broken but not because it was sticking especially because its been sitting.
An exhaust valve will move twice every second revolution of crankshaft (opens then closes) so at 800 rpm idle the exhaust valve opens and closes 800 times...
So at 7000 rpm where the gti engine is happy to sit that valve has opened 3500 and closed 3500 times EVERY minute!
So i really doubt that it has "stuck"
Id be guessing without a proffesional diagnosis of the head it would be valve spring or valve bounce problem.

I'm just guessing using available info... eg... Supposedly good engine...sat for 5 months under cover, under the house, dry and warm... VERY noisy when first started, but after an hour or 2 of driving it was then quiet for a further couple of hours then despite the plan to nurse a new motor till the first 500ks oil change, without warning and at lowish revs, maybe 4000rpm it just went rattle rattle bang and seized .. Haven't bothered pulling the head down as I am well and truly over this whole thing...

Hydraulic lifters will always be noisy for a little after they sit and bleed down.
I have thrashed the fuck out of a gti engine before street and strip running nitrous oxide and turbo.
Its nothing you did there was a prob with the engine.
Last time i seen a failure like this it was a 240 hp engine bouncing off the limiter at QR.

Like I said ...I am just guessing... I am just glad there are some people around who are generous with there time and money and are willing to help out.. As for the rest well they just don't get it.. IMHO...The generous people get given even more, including a happy life, while the rest always struggle and are never happy..

Finally after 5 weeks it's finished.. Shame the first GTi engine was a fizzer..I painted a spare rocker cover today and installed it tonight. Replaced leaking water pump last weekend.. Very happy with the gti's performance.. Now that the 1.6 and the gti conversions are both done and sorted.. we might have some fun and have a few drags up our driveway .. My rex gets 0-100 up the driveway but I suspect neither of the zooks will be quite so quick...lol...and before someone say it's not about which engine wins in a drag... it's just for a bit of fun...ok...

That plug looks exactly the same as the plug I just pulled out my gti engine. Except mine has been thrashed for two years and was bound to happen at some stage.
