i got my hands on an 1980 lj81 and currently looking for parts and in the mean time im looking into the engine ans its speeds and although i dont plan on travelling so highways speeds arnt a must if need be and i need to maybe go someone 2 hours drive away along the highway i dont want to be redlining destroying the engine the entire time. ive been looking into slightly more powerful engine swaps that i could possible do in the future and the easiest most natural one ive found if to swap a f10a into the lj81 instead of the factory issued f8a and ive also heard of people putting a turbo on the f10a. the f10a is identical to the f8a and i little bigger with an extra 200cc instead of that they are identical same ports and everything so if people turbo the f10a and have no issues would it be possible to turbo the f8a factory engine found in the lj81s? i dont want to turbo it for fun i just want to make it more comfortable on highways. if it is possible to turbo an f8a would it put to much stress on the engine itself or any parts of the car? ive heard of f10a breaking 150 hp so i was wondering if an f8a could handle a small turbo to increase speeds to highway speeds.
Yeah you can turbo the F8a, if you're after more highway ability just fit an F10a. No one turbos the F8a because F10a are cheap, easy to fit and a fraction of the cost of turbocharging. I mean you can buy a whole F10a for less than the price of a cheap eBay turbo and the turbo itself is only a small part of the cost of turbocharging a car.
Even with a turbo you're still going to be doing 5200rpm at 100km/h, more power wont make any difference to the revs. I don't think a turbo is really going to improve the highway ability that much, a healthy stock F8a can do 100km/h and it does it reliably. You're far more likely to destroy the motor with a turbo than without one, they're pretty much bullet proof stock.
I've done a lot of highway trips in my LJ which has an F10a. It has the power to sit on 110km/h and I've done plenty of long trips like that, at that speed it's running at 5800rpm. I rarely cruise that fast anymore, I've got a bit more mechanical sympathy these days and the car was just never meant to go that fast. It's all over the road and coming out from a row of trees with a cross wind will make it change lanes, also you'll probably want earmuffs. It's much nicer cruising at 90-100.
Just get the old girl on the road first and see what you reckon of its highway ability. I'd be fitting an F10a before a turbo, the F10a is cheap and easy with predictable results.
How would you go about swapping an f10a into it, what modifications would you need to do in order to make it fit and work and how would you go for getting your hands on one, i personally only just found out the name of these engines so i have zero clue which vehicles have the f10a
