Seriously, save your money till you have double that and buy a second hand lincoln or similar. MUCH MUCH MUCH better unit, and if you don't use it it wont depreciate like crazy... The bunnings welder you will get $100 for a week after you've brought it home and decided it shit.

So what sort of mig should I get. Will be doing car panels to thick steel, mainly Suzuki stuff though.

Was thinking about unimig 180, Lincoln, or cigweld 250 compact
I use a cigweld 350 compact with wire feeder at work and it's lays out some decent welds.
I think the lincolns are out of my price range though

Lincoln 180sp, I would buy this over and over again. Friggen awesome with 0.6 wire and awesomer with 0.9 doing light car fab stuff

readin down the thread further a small mig tig inverter combo would be good best of both worlds. We have a 160 renegade at work mig tig combo and it is awesome it gets used alot they are only around $500-$600. but dont cut the 15amp plug down it wrecks something on the inveters.

??? How the hell does filing the plug down wreck the inverter?

You're not allowed to do it, that's why there's a 15a plug, but unless you're overloading the circuit and tripping it out you're not going to hurt the welder.

Still, don't do it, I'm just trying to find out what damage you're talking about from changing/modifying the plug.

Any muppet can 'MIG' not many of them can actually weld.

TIG seperates the men from the boys.

For the amount you use it, I would go a MIG. Easier, quicker, and possibly more versatile. TIG needs to be too sterile for general stuff, it's only when you start needing finesse in your work that a TIG starts to shine.

Since you got your papers now can you explain the benefits of the different size wires? hehe. I'm using 0.6 on a 200amp to do panel work at the moment. Would I be better using a different size?

I wanna know this too.. my drop saw draws waay more than the mig (had to change the circut breakers after they melted), but only has a 10Amp plug..

I picked up this old school Uni Mig. It's got a dodgy home made remote wire feeder, but I think I will get rid of that and bolt the wire feed back into the cabinet where it was originally. It's got a 4m torch in decent nick. The ground lead is a bit nasty but i'm just using the one off my TIG with it. Came with a Harris gas reg, which just needed a new o-ring. I did need to buy feed rollers for it though, as it came with one roller for 0.8 and 1.0mm aluminium wire.

I also bought a new gas shroud and insulator for the torch, some tips, 0.6 and 0.9 wire and a bottle of argoshield. Ready to rock & roll
