these are the same gearbox that run in some of the toyotas, jeeps and quite a few other things. you could sell them to the jeep boys too no doubt.

was looking at one from an early cressida, wonder if they were comp controlled???????? But I guess it don't have the torque convertor lock up either.

Hey guys,
Here's what I've done and what I know hope it helps you guys out.
A small microcontroller can be programmed to shift the Aisin-Warner transmissions. The downfall of 5V microcontrollers is they are suseptable to 12V RF interference, causing ghost shifting.
I have used a 12V Omron PLC to give me manual shift control and torque converter lock up, had the shift button/switches mounted on the steering wheel, very cool.
I use a shifter that switch two micro switches with a rod/rail for 1-4, very simple and easy to make. Well if you have a mill and a lathe anyway. I also have a switch to choose between letting the factory computer shift the trans of my manual shifter.
Two toggle switches can be used for 1-4 shifting as a cheap way into manual control.
There are Jeeps, Toyotas, Suzukis, Isuzus, Lexus and Mitsubishis that have Aisin-Warner 30-40LE and their variants in them.
Solenoid shift sequence is:
Gear Sol#1 Sol#2
1st ON OFF
2nd ON ON
3rd OFF ON
4th OFF OFF

so after reading this thread would i be correct in saying that the AW-4 can be used witout the factory G16B ECU (as i'm now running a stand alone haltech E6K ecu) do all AW-4's use there own auto computer? and all i need to supply the auto ecu is a tps signal ?
i'm using a GM (commodore) TPS switch on my G16 engine, would i get away with sending that TPS signal to the auto ecu ? should be a similar 5V regulated signal like suzuki sensors.
has anybody put more than factory power through the AW-4 auto ? mines doing 145HP ATW's currently, would be a shame to do the conversion and it not cope with the HP and torque increase.

A quick google tells you they run them in jeeps. So they must handle more power with ease.

If only it was as simple as that. The ECU converts the TPS signal to 4-bit Gray code that is fed into the TCM. I'm currently working on a unit that intercepts a TPS signal and converts it into this Gray code for the stock TCM to function properly for mnemonix so he can run an auto with this aftermarket ECU.

i'm guessing that whilst they might be the same externally they might be spec'd differently internally ie: clutch packs and bands material.
correct me somebody if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure that was the case with the trimatic's that they made diffent clutch pack setups for v6 and v8 versions.

if you coud mate this work you would become a very popular bloke on this site. whilst i'm not currently ready to do this conversion right now i would like to do this in the future i think it would greatly improve tha way my car gets all that power to the ground

The TCM that I have has only one pin for TPS (TH) are you saying that the gray code is sent serially? There is also a single pin for coolant temperature (WT).

I have got a vitara TCM now as well. These do run a single TPS and WT pins. After more research it seems that the AW4 behind Suzuki's, Toyota's and Jeep's all seem to run totally different styles of TCM inputs. Bit bizarre
Found out now that it's the Toyota TCM that uses the gray code input.
Doesn't solenoid 3 control the lockup convertor?

I have to say that I know hardly anything about autos, they are uncommon over here except in upmarket models and in some imports. I've been scouring the internet for info and from what I can ascertain the TPS signal is actually the idle switch (or its inverse). WT is a logic level but I haven't deternmined the temperture at which it switches or its polarity.
The code seems to indicate that the solenoid switching pattern is simply the inverse of the shift switch pattern.
Looking at the code I think I made an error with the schematic for the TCM so I need to look at that again, maybe it will become a bit clearer.
The third solenoid is the lock up converter. The schematic only shows them as S1,S2 and S3 so which one is which? on the processor port they are arranged S1,S3,S2.

Im down to about 85mm
My AW4 is sitting beside the zook ready to go in. Off the top of my head the box is around 15cm longer than the 5speed manual, measured from belhousing to the rear of Joes output adaptor.
I'm expecting the jackshaft to be around 125mm.

Can anyone tell me what this plug is and what it does? It is on the passenger side of the AW4 auto. As you may be able to see the wires have been crushed at some stage and are now cut through I was hoping that it is something I dont need but Im thinking its prob to a solenoid so it will have to stay for sure??

Just checked the FSM,
It's the A/T Shift Solenoid wiring. You will 100% have to rewire that plug or you won't be shifting gears.

DOH! Yeah I guess the hunch was correct, Thanks Steve. Now lets hope the plug comes apart so i can run new wires! Otherwise its gonna be a mongrel job!

I'm guessing all of the unwanted wires have been removed from your baleno loom already, so you would need to pieve it all back together if there was even a chance of getting it to work with the AW4. Although the Baleno never ran anAW4, so I don't like your chances.

Fatzook wrote: Although the Baleno never ran anAW4, so I don't like your chances. Me neither. It would require whichever gearbox the Baleno runs to have exactly the same switching logic as an AW-4. It would take heaps of research and I think some trial and error to work out if it was even possible. It is possible to run a Baleno (or Jimny) ECU and send the correct information to the vitara AW-4 TCC to get it to work properly - Doof is setup like this in the club, and runs and shifts well. I need an AW4 and TCM in a vehicle running with the wiring accessible so I can probe it out. Know of any I could suss out?
mnemonix have given me a shit-ton of info on the AW4 as he also requires an interface for his aftermarket comp to run it. Only issue is that the info is a bit contradictory and doesn't exactly tell me what I need about the Vit AW4 auto and TCM. Note: It does matter which TCM you get with it as I'm led to believe that the Toyota/Jeep have controlling scheme.
