Hi all,
I have a 96 coily sierra.
While driving tonight i heard a grinding noise, i think it was comming from the rear end. It wasnt constant, it was like on off like a ticking if you can sorta understand and every now and then would squeal, when i got home it smelt quite a bit also. i know i havent given much info and i havent looked yet as its too dark, but any tips as where to start look or anything would be greatly appriciated.

Stop running the Sierra on beans, petrol works better

haha no beans, im sorta new to this stuff but i was thinking diff, tail shaft wheel bearing? am i on the right track?

Just hope i can get it fixed before the weekend, got a trip planned!!! will post if i run into any more troubles.

diff and tailshaft wouldnt normally smell though... wheel bearings generate heat and burn their seals etc, a siezed on brake just smells bad =)

easy enough to test by jacking up each rear wheel and giving it a spin and feeling for play.

Drive it and touch the hubs lightly. You'll soon feel the heat of a sticky wheel bearing or brakes.

I jus had that problem pulled out the rear wheel bearings an half the balls had flat spots so changed em all good now

worn pinion bearing will smell as the oil seeps out n is flung round onto exhaust etc.. will also sound like a tick n squeal depending how bad it is..

I would be thinking brakes. If a rear cylnder is seized or sticking.
