Will a 2.0 litre 4 banger out of a Later Vitara bolt up to my AW4 Auto?
And could I use the same computer and wiring loom in my 93 EFI Vit?
Serious noises from my motor,
looking into engine options, now that I have to.

Next questions.
Can I fit a coil pack type donk with my wiring,
or use my dizzy instead?
Or re use my extractors, manifold etc.

I would think that you could treat a coil pack motor like a Swift swap, change cam and rear housing, put your manifolds on and keep your ECU and so on, but would be better to hear from somebody that has done it
2l would be a no go though

I don't really want that sort of power.
I don't think drive line is up to it?
Need reliability more.
I may just find a G16B has enough power, if its not worn out.
Not having ever driven a 1.6 it is hard to compare it to anything.
Some of the possible donks out there seem to be less powerful anyway.
May attempt a rebuild, but would prefer bolting in a complete engine.
Will investigate the noise more closely tomorrow.

I prefer buying engines running in cars, or engines with warrantees.

I love an engine swap but is it worth taking a look at the current motor first? What sort of budget do you have to work with? How soon do you need it back on the road?

Yes, I reckon its worth considering a set of bearings, or a kit, as there is no oil loss, smoke, or leaks and it has only lost a small amount of coolant.
Time is not an issue, as I am on a disability pension,
ie don't work, and public transport is close by.
But it has been a long build, I was hoping to start driving it more now.
Budget is close to zero now, have to save up again,
after buying the low range gears.
If I do a swap, will only be something that fits in with laws,
easyish to fit,
and don't need an engineers report.
Probably a fresher engine would have the power I desire anyway.
Have used jap import donks in the past, mostly very happy with,
but still a bit of a gamble.

Also there is not alot of difference between a J20a and a H25a..... both are up around the 100kw mark.
Easier to just get a change over motor if you happy with the power it had.

I think this thread needs an injection of reality.
A replacement 16V 1.6 bottom end is both cheap and easy to get hold of. Last time I was at Imlachs there were about 7 of them there.
Any J, M or H series motor is going to be a huge PITA to swap, roughly as much hassle as a non-suzuki swap. Any of these motors will also require engineering approval.
Any non-suzuki engine swap will only be as good as the gearbox/transfer combination that can be used. An SR20, for instance, would require the construction of a hybrid silvia/skyline/patrol transmission using a patrol transfer... or something.
An ideal swap would be a 3RZ and auto from a hilux, but will it clear the front diff? do you have the money and nouse to convert to a gear drive transfer? ( all 3RZ autos were mated to chain drive transfers= no low gears)
I understand the desire for more torque at lower revs to counter the lack of diff gears for vitaras running big tyres, but I don't think it's feasible in your application Chris.
Steve.
PS I think the most effective swap for a vitara is a 3.9 Rover V8, ZF auto and LT230 transfer.

It felt powerful after a 1.3 carby donk.
But it may have never been full power, no idea.
I'll do quickest cheapest most reliable thing,
not want more garage time, its driving season

Yes, with me, it always comes back to that.
Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Not found any real viable options yet.
But reliability/cost is number one,
and easy cheap maintainance.

There aren't any other than a fresher G16B. You already have a low geared transfer and an AW-4.
Steve.

I have learned from the interwebs that
later G16B are meant to have a better/stronger crank.
Not confirmed that yet.
But sounds like a bonus
Have found a few cheapish bottom ends,
but I dont know what head is like yet.
Hoping to change a whole motor, rather than rebuild.
But tomorrow I'll pull sump off and decide wether I can do a simple ring and bearing job, or not

There's no such thing as a simple ring and bearing job. If its made enough noise for you to stop driving it you'll be up for crank grinding and you'll be on the merry-go-round of short life and multiple patch up jobs or more money in the motor than you've spent on the car to date.
Find a low KM G16 motor with decent compression and a head that passes a compression test. You don't need a better/stronger crank, you need an engine with bearings between the crank and the block. You're not going to turbo/supercharge/N02 it so what Suzuki thought it needed in the first place will be fine.
I'd use the newest baleno motor you can find.
Steve

So? That's just a cam swap - no need to separate black and head=win if the result is a newer, fresher motor.
I'd rather swap cams on a 2001 Baleno motor than fit a 1991 Vitara motor for the sake of a camshaft.
Steve.

This is roughly where my searching has lead me.
Wasn't sure if I could swap cam, and maybe sump,
like I did for Barina donk into the Sierra.
And those later model G16's would have the better crank as well.
There appears to be a G18 as well,
shares some components with the 2.o vit.
But not sure how many are around.
Not sure wether thats a realistic option yet,
as I need to stick with my extractors etc to save dosh and work..
(I just found head gaskets not same, so little chance 1.8 will share parts with 1.6)

There is a suzuki x90 i noticed on ebay in SE melbourne which has a G16B and AW4 the same as you already have. Possibly be good for parts or if you wanted the engine you could probably make some money back on the other parts. Its done a few k's but might suit as a plug and play temporary option and you could rebuild the original engine.
