Hi guys. What's the best way to get silicon off? A previous owner has gone a bit crazy with the stuff along a couple of seams, but want to get it all off so I can lay a bit of paint down

fish eyes in a can, spray painters worst nightmare

i'm no painter but, i'd clean it up as much as possible, prep the area, wash it with prepsol/wax n grease remover & hope for the best or go back to bare metal. pretty sure there is a silicone type additive that you can get for contaminated cars that you mix with the paint to stop the paint reacting with the silicone when spraying with a gun/compressor.

Not sure about Silicon, but I use Eucalyptus oil cleaning up Sikaflex. Works brilliantly.

plastic scraper (if you dont want to scratch shit) other wise steel is better
and then prepsol and your fingernail.

sometimes those pinstripe removal wheels work well to

silicone sucks balls and is for lazy fuckers

oh and for painting silicone drops stops fish eyes.

That selleys stuff is basically petrol/acid mix in a gel

I am a tight arse so I would use my fingers as much as I can then rub with petrol, getting a terrible headache, then finish with acetone for the remants.

If you have a air compressor then you could soda blast it.

i imagined 50% caustic soda in a paint sprayer... that would strip anything, including all the aluminium within 500m. glad to see its only baking soda!

you can buy a rubber wheel that fits in your cordless drill, doest effect paint at all, i used it to take of glus from a jet ski matt, couldnt believe how easy it was, depending on how much ther is i would try an eraser just to see how it goes

I use a wire wheel mounted in the drill or the sand blaster ($30 from Supercheap, you'l need a good air compressor though!).

dusting the silicone affected area with plaster dust will allow you to paint over it without fish eyes... doesnt do much for the gloss level though.

Sand blasted a swingarm with a sticker on it back when I wasn't so sharp (16) and I had a permanent embossed sticker outline as it chewed the metal around it but did not a lot to the sticker. Does this not happen with the silicon?

YEP. You cannot blast silicone off metal with sand or soda.
