Hey guys,

sitting here thinking about painting my rims or getting em powdercoated. was just wondering if anyone has been down the painting path and regretted it or vise versa?
these are the rims (not on the car atm)



was going to go for a semi-gloss black in both cases. im thinking its going to be cheaper going down the DIY path but im a bit concerned with it only lasting 6 months.

Do i need to do anything different for alloy rims? im thinking i might use some primer filler to get rid of some minor dings? is it worth the saving vs effort?

How much would i expect to take a rim down and get powdercoated?


BTW these are my road rims, wont be doing any wheeling with them on if thats a factor. maybe the odd dirt road, you get the idea.

I vote for powder coating should only cost $50 to $60 bucks a rim

On a steel rim I would say Killrust black or white or pink.. whatever...

On an alloy rim it would come down to budget and/or desired colour/finish.

Powdercoating rims means stripping tyres, refitting tyres and then rebalancing, none of which is needed to just paint them.

i got my rims done locally for $50ea which included sandblasting, priming and powdwercoating.... pretty cheap really, and the finish is great (and strong!)

if you're going to get them powder coated, get them zinc plated first so they wont rust under the powder coat

out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what to tell the tyre shop when im looking for a alloy rim. every shop ive rang or gone to they just go "nah not jimnys mate"

so im thinking if i can tell them a size,pitch and offset etc they will stop blowing me off and tell me what i can fit (cos sounds like they just cbf looking up what size they are, lazy pricks)

cos i was just thinking might be just as exxy to get some new alloys.

just ask for king rims, 15x7 in a neg 13, 5 on 5.5 (139.7)

you'd want to be running a 235/75 on a 7" rim though.

if you're under that just keep the stockers.

I had a PC place this week tell me they wouldn't do alloys (or they would, but they wouldn't guarantee the results) because of the risk of imperfections and bubbles in the casting potentially surfacing during the baking and ruining the finish.

First I've heard of it... anyone got any knowledge to support or deny?

Otherwise the quote was $65 per rim for blasting and coating, which was the best I got from a quick ring around Sydney.

Thanks mate, already got a set of sunnys though with my km2's (that pic is pretty damn old, just used it for the alloy photo)

but ill use that info to get some info on some alloys though. i dont have any stock alloys. i might look at 6" rims, see what happens.

Obviously powdercoat will look more proffessional and is more durable than paint. But for a cheap DIY solution, painting the wheels will be a fraction of the cost. Sure it may need some touching up once a year or so but a spray can or two doesn't cost too much.

um, im in Townsville....... thats a bit north of Brisbane if your not near a map

just rang all the powdercoaters in town (all 3 of them) and cheapest is 88 bux a rim.

alloy still corrodes the same as steel/iron, by oxidation caused by an impure water/oxygen mix and or other chemicals or electro chemical reactions.

its seen as the whiteish substace on aluminium

alloys such as aluminium just have a stronger Passivation layer. preventing the surface breakdown of the material. as well as a oxidation layer that forms when aluminium is exposed to air

but the end effect is the same causing damage and weakening of the material.

Saturn (satin) black.

matt black will be harder to clean & keep clean due to the textured finish, what would be cool is a matt centre & a gloss lip

they have a color called coral black which is pretty close to that, a bit glossier but not as bad as a regular gloss. Ill see how i go

i called a few places to get my beadlock rims sandblasted and powdercoated.
1 place $175 per wheel!
The place I found eventually, $50 per wheel striped, and re coated!!!!!!!!!!!
Im taking them there in the morning and he said should be a 3 day turnaround.

These cost $75 each to powdercoat. They were and absolute PITA I am told.

So a standard wheel should be no more than $60.

I must say, just painted my stock vit rims with the paint from autobarn. They have come up a treat, how long they stay that way is yet to be seen, but after the best part of 20 years service I figured they can't look any worse! thinking the alloy bullbar could use some paint to match now, not sure how it will stick though.

You will need a GOOD quality alloy ( all surface ) primer. You may need to 2000 grit wet and dry it first to help adhesion. And ofcoarse it will need to be super clean.

well i think i might be scrapping the powdercoat idea and just running with the km2's 100% duty. its probably cheaper forking out for a spare steely and an extra km2.

i had the alloys on today and was pretty disgusted with it, handling went shit and it just looks poo.

if i ever have the need to get H/T's ill just get another set of sunnys
