Have been having trouble with my 1.3ba misfiring and stalling. When i first start engine, everything seems fine, after few minutes warming up it devolps a misfire right thru the rev range, and eventually stalls under 1500rpm. Thought it was a carby problem but have changed carbys and still has exactly same symptoms. After i leave it for 30 min or so it will start fine and idle at 900rpm, but then the gremlins return after few minutes of engine running. I have tried checking valve clearances, changing timing setting on the dizzy, put new rotor and cap on, changing carbs, i guess all thats left is leads and plugs. Any suggestions on what else could be causing this problem?

by 'missfire' i take it you mean a steady miss, ie, one cylinder not firing. Sounds like ignition.

when it is missfireing, take each lead off in turn, and see which one makes no difference to the way the engine runs (you will need a second person to hold a steady RPM, since it wont idle)

that way you will have isolated which cylinder is the problem...

try swapping a couple of leads over (both ends) and see if the missfire moves with the lead.

I'd be getting some new plugs before i even worried about further diagnosis anyway.

if they are all missing, try another coil, it could be cooked

Could be a vacuum problem.
Check the carby bolts and manifold are tight.
Check the PCV.
Check the vac adv. diaphragm.

Yes, sounds like a leak in your intake system somewhere. When its cold, the choke enriches the fuel so the leak is not such a problem leaning out the fuel. I had a similar problem that was a missing plug on a spare manifold vacuum takeoff pipe near cylinder 1. Dunno how the cap fell off! Check all the hoses and doodads connected to vacuum supply from the manifold as well as the manifold bolts. How to test the valves and things is in the shop manual http://www.suzukiinfo.com/

Also check your earthing strap from the B(-) to the engine block. Take it off and re-crimp the eyes because the vibration can eventually loosen the wires. I've replaced my earthing strap with a heavy duty one, plus an additional one to my second battery and coincidentally ever since then I get 10%+ better milage - don't know whether that was related - very strange!

I had a similar problem recently

From my experience, misfires are usually electrical. It's easy to blame fuel but 9 times out of 10 it will be spark.

Leads, plugs, timing, dizzy cap & rotor first. If you havn't done leads & plugs do them, try a borrowed set of leads from another car, do all 5 first, then one at time to find the crook one.

Check & clean the electrical connections to the earth, coil and resistor if you have one. Coils sometimes breakdown when hot.

In my recent case, it was intemittent, and occured when hot and seemed caused by hard engine deceleration. I exhausted the electrical & fuel (I changed everything including the carby). I think it eneded up being the inlet manifold valve below the carby, Its called the Exhaust return valve (or something similar). Its operated by vacuum. I took it off and cut a shim to cover the exhaust passages and put it back on, to block it off.

So far it seem so be better.

Ok, put new coil, leads and plugs in today and still no better. I did notice that when i have a plug lead off, it throws a spark out of the coil lead ( from under the rubber cap on top of coil and arcs on +terminal of coil). Should this be happening?

Nope 8O

with a plug lead off you might get a spark from the disconnected end of the lead to metal on the car,

Have a look when its dark, with all the leads on check for arc / sparks escaping from the leads etc, this may explain your miss.

So it is usually electrical....... fixed by blocking the non electrical EGR valve... How does that make any sense?

OP:
If you see any arcing at the coil it is probably cracked and needs replacing.

Brand new bosch coil put on yesterday. Only sparks at coil when a lead is off one of the spark plugs.

Will a 1.0l coil to dizzy lead fit my 1.3? I borrowed a second set of leads but only the 4 spark plug leads.
