G'day all

I have a '94 G16B Vitara that stalls after restarting.

Scenario:

- Start the car from cold and go someplace.
- Get someplace and switch off the engine.
- Come back in about 5-10 minutes. Car starts but wont idle and dies.

Work around is to turn on the air con which ups the idle temporarily and eventually after a few minutes all comes good.
The air con trick does not work if the air con was already in use before stopping the engine, have to keep foot on the accelerator instead

The problem eventually clears itself but is a mongrel in traffic...Tried revving the engine to clear it but the only fix is the air con a steady drive or to let it cool

Vapour lock?
Something sticking ?
Something else?
Any clues?

Forgot to mention havnig the foot on the brake has an effect as well (lowers the revs) but only after its hot

ahhh, check the idle control valve, make sure its not stuck (under the throttlebody). I had the same problem but it seemed to correct itself over time, i did change the intake piping so perhaps there was a leak after the afm?

Sounds like it's losing engine vacuum somewhere.. Check all the hoses for splits or cracks....... Check all the inlet manifold bolts are tight.

Do the brakes still work properly? If not, there may be a split in the booster diaphragm.

Brakes are fine

When you slow to a set of lights the revs drop to say 300rpm but as soon as you take your foot off the revs come back to normal.

Maybe the vacuum thing is related to the stalling somehow. And it must be temperature driven because I got to work this AM and killed the car then restarted a few minutes later and all was good.

I found the answer on this page http://www.kick-fix.com/EGR.html failure 96-98 I think from memory.

Cheers jabba, i did that and it worked a treat, had a couple of mill of carbon caked on everywhere.
