Gday Guys,
My G16B vitara seems to have a gremlim, I was just wondering if anyone could offer any tips as its making me want to sell it while i still have my other car!

The idle is not consistent and will drop every 4 seconds or so and the ECU will pick it back up. It idles at normal speed until the drop.

I have changed the air filter as i thought maybe it was blocked up. - no help

I took it past my mechanic and he told me that Cyl 4 is getting a different voltage at the lead to the other leads and showed me on the graph it is noticably lower. He also noticed that the fuel is not burning efficiently in cyl 4 and its blackening the spark plug.

He told me it could be the injector isnt spraying/its faulty or the valves in cyl 4 may not be closing properly (wouldnt explain the low voltage) or it could be the dizzy but it looked ok.

Anyone have any tips or prices if it turns out to just be an injector?

I havent done a comp test yet to check the valves as my mech didnt have time and just checked the voltage and emmisions as a favour (emmisions thru the roof also due to not burning all the fuel in cyl 4)

Thanks

Before you rip the head off it, fit a new O2 sensor, It won't alway's throw a code even when faulty.

If it was an injector the O2 should throw a out of range or to rich code.

Hope that help's a lil :P

Thanks steknig...i dont think its an O2 sensor issue due to the misfire only occuring on cyl4

a compression test showed 160psi even across all 4 so i fitted new plugs (the correct ones this time) and a new rotor button (couldnt find a dizzy cap in stock to fit my car but mine appears fine on inspection)

so all signs now point to a faulty fuel injector on cyl 4...very frustrating and annoying so ill be dropping the car off to my mechanic to get the injectors flow tested and cleaned.

VERY pleased with the compression though. (considering the odo showed 280k)

i love how easy the zook is to work on, i may even fab an old water pistol with a mouse on a wheel to work as my 4th injector.

the leads and plugs are changed when i first got the car which didnt help either.

ill be dropping the car off to the mechanic in afew days to investigate

when driving in first or low range, the car splutters and surges as if its a flooding carby so im almost certain its the injector.

will update when i get the car back.

over

don't the 1.6's suffer from blocked EGR passages, could this be the problem?

i cant say no because it has me stumped but if it was a sensor or a valve i would assume all cylinders would be affected equally...only the 4th is shitting though which is why im pretty sure its an injector.

if it turns out to be something major im possibly going to join www.auswalkers.com

before you commit...

what style of distibutor/ coil does yours have? is it a single remote coil to a normal style distributor?

if it is you would have to be looking at the number four lead and also check the pin on the inside of the distributor, as if the internal aluminium pin is covered with corrison it is a very good insulator, and if clean you will get a much better spark.

even if the leads were changed recently, if some-one has pulled on them incorrectly you can break them...

what spark plug gap are you running? most g16b's need to be run at 0.8mm, not the 1.1 of most efi engines.

ok as a conclusion to this saga,
mechanic checked injectors and cyl4 was sticking open and causing the cyl to flood so badly that every time i drove the car or let it idle fuel would be comming out the exhaust and making lovely clouds of dolphin killing smoke.

-injector removed and tested and operating fine
-ecu swapped for testing and operating fine
-voltage to injector was still incorrect ie. too low or too high -varied

problem was traced to a short in the wire controlling the 4th injector so instead of rewiring it via the loom which would have been expensive and time consuming, the injector runs on a separate wire to the ecu now and is all fixed.

what a headache.

thanks for the advice from everyone with this problem though. great forum, great people.
