Just been looking under the dash trying to work out the air vent system in my sierra, since i've bought it, it hasn't really worked properly (ie: air doesnt go where you tell it to go)... and i've found out the last owner didn't bother connecting half the pipes or cables together, so the whole thing is a jigsaw...

I was thinking of just ripping the whole thing out, and installing something custom - all it really needs is a few 12V fans, a little trunking and a few switches and cabling

anyone done it or know of a better way?

and how do you wire it so it turns off with the ignition?

(as a side question - i have a 4x50W head unit and the rear right speaker isnt working... my $15 multimeter measures about 5.5V from both positive and negative wires on the other three speaker cables and the rear right positive speaker cable, but the rear right negative speaker cable doesn't measure anything... is that a faulty head unit?)

Do yourself a favour and stick with the stock setup. When it works it works well.

Connecting the pipes is all pretty straight forward, you have a manifold that connects the middle 2 vents in the dash into the top of the airbox/blower assembly. Then you have 2 moulded tubes with a convoluted body that run to the vents at either end of the dash. That's it for the vents!

I can't remember exactly where the connectors are but there should be one that goes to the body of the blower assy. and the fan switch goes into the loom that runs along behind the dash itself. The fan should have power when the ignition is on, but not when accessories is on.

The control cables seem a little tricky, and you're probably better off looking at one that's already set up. The hot/cold one is easy, it goes to the heater tap on the firewall. The vent one goes to a little arm on the side of the airbox, same goes for the recirc/fresh cable. Finding these isn't a big issue, but getting the routing of the cables is probably more difficult, as I said you'll probably want to look at one that's setup already.

ALSO don't panic if you switch to heat and dont get hot air from the vents, hot air only comes out the bottom of the heater box, and to the windscreen demister.

Do yourself a favour tho, take out the whole dash, remove and strip the airbox, give the box and the heatercore a good clean, then reassemble it, cleaning and checking everything as you go.
Not only will it work great, but its a good piece of mind knowing that everything was done and works. Its a pretty easy job and will take you less than a day.

That's good advice!!! I've done that to a few zooks and it makes a big difference cleaning out all the leaves!!!

Here is the crap i found in mine when i did it. There was zero airflow.



A few hints and tips when you remove the heaterbox:
There is a single bolt/screw holding the heaterbox that you access inside teh engine bay on the firewall, took me about 15min to work that one out lol.
The heaterhoses will be a bastard to detatch from the heater core at firewall, you can either be paitent and work at it without damaging the thin walls of the heatercore pipes, or just cut the hose with a knife and replace the hoses with new ones. You really should be replacing them anyway if they havent been done since new.
Take a photo of where all the mechanisms go (yours is detatched i think you said anyway, so you may need to look at a mates car).
All or at least most of the foam will propably be degraded, you can buy this stuff i strips from Clark Rubber or Bunnings so thats no problem.

How much time did it take to clean and reinstall the heater box - that's something I might do through the week if I can get everything I need.


Will my A/C box need any de-leafing attention, or is it seperate to the main air intake?

che - Your a/c only recirculates the air in the car (well mine does) so it shouldnt need deleafing.
