My GV has developed an intermittent miss at light to medium throttle application along with a check engine light that comes and goes. It feels/sounds like only one bank is missing (V6). I suspect one of the O2 sensors is packing it in, but can't be sure until I get a OBD reader.

My question is what is the life expectancy for a 02 sensor?

Mine has about 130k on the clock.

Should get a bit more than that out of it, 160 maybe. Could be a coil pack? The O2 sensor would be reading rich when it's misfiring. Has it had head gasket problems lately?

NO! don't even say that :x With the luck I've had with this car it wouldn't suprise me!

But seriously, no, no head problems so far.

I forgot to mention that in the last 2 years I have been running it about 75% of the time on Opal Low aromatic (non-sniffable) Unleaded, which is I'm pretty sure made from cheap Tequila and caustic soda.

o2 sensors are pretty hardy, remember the ecu cant tell if the ecu is faulty, only that its sending a signal thats not what it expects, so it could infact be running very rich or very lean at teh time which causes the miss, yuo ll need to find what that is

bar the check engine light (unless its losing ignition signal) I would be looking at dirty injectors

the GV we had got up to about 100,000 and the passenger side O2 sensor was just starting to trigger the check engine light when under gentle load.

to check the ECU check codes, turn the ignition on (but engine not running) then use the process defined in the attachment.
the fault codes are pretty self explanitary...

hope this helps.

cheers

nissvit: Many thanks for such a helpful post :D

Your symptoms sound the same as mine. I'll have to have a go at reading the code.

Cheers

Where is this terminal located?

I went to have a play with it this morning but couldn't find anything that looked the same as the diagram. I found a connector on the drivers side of the engine bay but it looks different :?

Found the connector, it is the one in the engine bay on the RH side inner guard. Had to have a couple of beers and squint a bit for it to look like the diagram....

Followed the procedure and like magic the check engine light started flashing codes at me!

Codes where 26 (RH bank oxygen sensor) and 52 (fuel system) which I assume is also referring to the oxygen sensor.

Anyone got the hot tip on where to get a new sensor from? Or am I stuck with genuine?

I replaced the one my J20a with a universal Bosch O2 sensor, I'm guessing yours is a 4 wire heated sensor?

The part number was # 0258986507775 it was around $100 instead of $300+

Hope this helps.

Yep,

As as far as I know it's a 4 wire heated jobbie.

I have just been through the 02 (Lambda)sensor hunt for my GV. Here is what I found.

OE sensor for V6 GV is a NTK (Same company who make NGK spark plugs) OZA 536-J1 this has been superseded by OZA 495-J2 ($85.60 veale auto parts)

Same sensor as above but from Goldy Suzuki $420

Universal $132 ( The universal require wire to be joined and original plug reused)

These are all Zirconia 4 wire heated sensors. Life expectancy ranges from 50K to 160K depending on size and type. O2 sensors do need checking as with spark plugs. They tend to start slowing down and not sending the signal to the ECM quick enough which results in incorrect fuel air mixture. I found with my sensor it had stopped sending any data at all so the ECM was leaving it on the Idle mixture. Which is why it was using more fuel than normal.

I give you 5000km before it start's trowing code's again, thay will range from voltage to lw, voltage to high & sen out of rang..
Don't bother with the universal O2's..

Yeah I wasn't impressed with the idea of the universal sensor. I have another NTK sensor on order for when the other side sensor poos.

I checked mine with an osciliscope not the codes. I love the easy access to the GV ECM plugs for the Oscope. Probably not that good for water resistance though.

For some reason that is beyond me, the passenger one goes the most, can throw the same code for heated 02 sen & or it's circuit, but wont tell you which one.

I have had to pull the manifolds off to get rusted in o2's out of Suzuki's, the v6's blow, thay were not designed to be removed in car.

That's the beauty of the Ociliscope. I could tell which one was not working and if it was the wiring or the sensor. I could see the sensor recieving power from the ECM but not returning any varience in voltage . And you are dead right it was my passenger side that went 8O. It wasn't rusted in though came out quite easy just lucky I guess.

My drivers side went first, closely followed by the passengers.

Both of them were easy to get out, once I had evolved two extra wrists and eyeballs on my fingertips to get the plug undone

I can watch both of them & the fuel trim in live data with the SDT.
Oscilloscope, havn't use one of them on a car in friggen years.

I asked an apprentice if he has ever used one & he said " is that like a microscope?"

I remembered last night after logging off, I can use the Tech2 & SDT as mutli meter's & Oscilloscope, use it quite offten.

Not quite in the same manner as the ole "tune-a-scope" tho, as the moder day car's don't run a single coil & h/t leads.

So how do do you check the base timing on these new-fangled internal combustion engines?

I use the SDT, there is(not that i've had to use it) a bridge connector in the harness that once bridged you can use a timing light to check it, not sure how that would go on an all coil eng tho, most timing light's go of no1 h/t lead.

This ociliscope is on the laptop with a data logger recording every milli second and has four individual imputs. This allows both o2 sensors to be checked against each other, if there were four i could test four.

The kit is really comprehensive comes with all sorts of attachments. One is an extension lead for coil packs like the 2.5 V6. Pull out the coil pack, attach the lead and then the timing light if that is your cup of tea.

I am finding it difficult to find a NTK supplier who can get me another sensor directly from NTK. They all use wholesaler's who only order in bulk. Was thinking of getting a heap and selling them. $85 dollars is heaps cheaper than what suzuki sell them for so they might go.

I have on of these in my passenger side, not sure of the brand, but it plugged
straight in & is going strong still after 15k.
Like you I wasn't keen to pay $465 for a Suzuki one. 8O

Greg, where did you get the the NTK o2 sensor from & is it still working?

Just trying to diagnose the locker trouble by driving it around to try and make rhyme or reason of when it locks and unlocks. Forgot to check the fuel before I started.
