Hi all, im going to do a second rebuild with the carby on my zook, But this time going to pay alot more attention to detail.

Im going to do an over night maybe even a 2 day soaking to get all the crud out, But just dont know what would be best for soaking it in,

i have read things like petrol, Acetone, parts cleaner etc etc. But im just wondering what you guys have had success with, I have been thinkning about getting a couple of cans of carby cleaner and just emtying them into an old flower tin and soaking it in that, But thats going to be a bit expensive compared to petrol and alike.

Hey Jord,

I always let mine sit upside down in petrol over night, then give it a good blow out with the compressor.

petrol - its designed to have that running through it =)

be aware though that it might dislodge some really old stuff, so would need a really solid clean out to stop you getting debris going into the motor later on.

On the same topic, what do carby/engine reco shops use in their acid baths? Anyone know? The stuff comes out like new after being dipped in it!

Pretty sure it's caustic soda.... not an acid, but a pretty natsy alkali.

A hot wash in some cases, with a Sodium hydroxide base.

Petrol is useless, any deposits in a carby are there cause they are petrol proof anyway!!!

there are special liquids for dipping carbies in, too dear for a single job though

The good shit was Cressilic acid (now banned in most workshops and everywhere else due to extreme carcinogenic nature) , Carbolene is by far the friendlier version and is used by most carby re-builders, engine recoers etc now. NOT CHEAP!!!!
