Few questions

1. max offset rims. Is this just the largest offset that a manufacturer makes?

2. Rim spacers, I have only heard bad about spacers wearing out wheel bearings. Does anyone have good feedback or experience with them?

3. does a max offset rim also wear on wheel bearings?

1. offset is a measurement of the distance between the centre of the wheel and where it bolts up. see pic below.
wheel manufacturers only make wheels in specific offsets which are close to OEM specs. wheels from other models can be used to achieve the result your after. eg. putting f100 rims on a sierra to increase the track
Image

2. they are illegal in all states as far as i know.

2+3. by widening the track the force is created further away from the wheel bearning, meaning a greater force acts upon it...ultimately increasing the speed it will wear out

In qld you can increase the track width of a vehicle no more then 50mm (last time i checked).

Spacers are illegal and very easy to spot, i have heared about spacers coming loose and people lossing a wheel at speed (on road) 8O . I would only run spacers off road if i checked them every time i drove.
Offset rims are less noticeable, unless you know what to look for. They will put some extra wear on bearings, but this will happen with bigger tyres anyway.
Maximum offset will vary between brands and size.

Those centres would be cool in some Toyota 16"x5.5" split rims, then I could run Duals on the back of the Ute! :P

(I wonder if the wheel studs would hack it? )

For comp rig only :D

F1 cars have an engine rebuild after every 500kms.

So why can't a comp spec 4x4 have a bearing change once every month or two? :D

max isnt a measurement, its a line made up by some idiot to make their shit sound better than some other idiot

there is no reason the mounting face can only be flush with the inside bead, therefore it is not max it is 0 backspace

it sometimes refer to people chopping the center and rewelding it in with the maximum offset achievable with that combo but still its not a measurement its just s line to make redneck shit sound cool

I was after info concerning wheel bearings, weaves wrote this for me an all, hope its ok to copy n paste.

As he tells it, offset has very little to do with bearing wear.

The load rating of a wheel bearing far exceeds the loads it will face with big offset or wide wheels. For example a rear wheel bearing on a zook have a dynamic load rating of 27kn (2.75 tonne) and static rating of 15.3kn (1.56 tonne) , now times that by 2 bearings per axle, so effectively you have a axle capable of holding 5.5 tonne of rolling force.

compare this to the fronts, you have 2 bearings per wheel, 4 across the front housing, each on of those bearings is capable of withstanding a dynamic load of 66kn (6.73 tonne) and a static load of 78kn (7.9 tonne). Thats a load rating of 13.46 dynamic tonne per wheel, or a static load of 15.8 tonne. i seriously doubt a set of offset wheels will on their own destroy wheel bearings.

You have to keep in mind that these figures are the very limits of what they can withstand at perfect operating conditions.

so in a perfect world wheel bearings should last tens of thousands of hours of work.

What does cause them to fail however is foreign matter contaminating the grease and acting like sandpaper as you drive. When going through dirt and mud it gets right up against your seal, gets past the first lip and gets stuck between the two sealing lips and wears the sealing surface away, then it eventually wears so bad that dirt and mud gets straight past and into you bearings.

The best way to protect your bearings is regular maintinence, pulling the bearings out, flushing, and replacing the grease and seal and inspecting the sealing surface and maintaining that aswell.

i hope this answers a few questions.

I thought 500-600 a year on wheelbearings for a comp rig was reasonable???

I love how you get metric and imperial measurments with the one rim sizing.

just out of curiosity for us dumb ass new blokes. whats the biggest offset rims you can fit to a NT and WT with a 31" muddy before you get issues and start needing to look at moving the diff/need more than a love tap of seams etc?

Depends on how much flex/lift/bodylift etc.

Lets just say you could buy a reasonable condition WT sierra for the same price as 4 of those wheels ( not including tyres!! )

If your budget is up to it, shoot me a PM.

Agreed. Every one is quick to say if you run wheel spacers or flipped rims you will eat wheel bearings but has any one actually had experience with this? However i would be interested i knowing how king pin bearings stand up to really big offset, be it through rims, wheel spacer or both. I run wheel spacers and will have flipped rims in the near future but my car is a trailer queen so bearing life is not a big issue. I do have a problem with chewing out inner axle seals which i guess is from incorrect pre load on my king pin bearings and the large offset i am running. I also carry spare bearing, wheel and kingpin, whenever i take the car out.
