Have noticed many people including myself have the 3 inch calmini systems installed, woundering how many people get them registered? If so, what needs to be done in your state and what not to get it over the pits. Had to get mine engineered and so on, with so many people installing them, have any authorities legalised them in any way or had them approved to Australian standards?

Was a headache getting mine legal as mine it was the first one in NT with the lift. Any information from different states would be great.

Sierra or Vitara?

The Calmini 3" Vitara kit contains replacement wishbone arms that would need to be looked at by an engineer. The 3"Sierra kit is just leaves that in itself is not a design change requiring certification, but either kit will exceed the limits set out in the National Code Of Practice (NCOP):

"Changes to ride height
Changes to ride height are limited to one third of the working travel of the suspension from kerb mass height to metal to metal bump or rebound positions as specified by the manufacturer."

The NCOP are guidelines used by the Fed Govt to try and make all State regulations consistant, but are not mandated as law. Each State or Territory may have minor variations from the National Code. The ADR's are law and MUST be followed in each every State. Note that suspensions are not dealt with under ADRs or Aust Standards, but any changes to Manufacturer's specs not ADR'd will come under NCOP11.

Strictly speaking, the replacement arms in the calmini kit need to be submitted for destruction testing etc before they could be given the rubber stamp by the RTA etc. You may find an engineer to sign off on them, but if they fail during an accident, and the appropriate paperwork for them does not exist, someone will be in some deep shit.

The front arms have been accepted in Vic based on Non-Destructive testing (Magnetic Particle Examination) only.

This in itself isn't cheap as the arms have to have the powdercoating stripped before testing.

The test itself should cost around $250.

I'm making no judgement as to whether this is appropriate or not, only that it has been deemed acceptable in Vic.

I believe the fact the arms had been in use for some years helped as they were deemed "fit for service" so long as they passed crack testing, and not treated as an untried design.

Steve.

PS the rear hiem joint is a no-no in Vic.

the NT allows up to 100mm of lift and the process of getting approval for more lift is
reasonably easy.

Cheers For the information. Very fascinated on the fact Vic has done some sort of paper work on them. Would enjoy to see these kits pass some sort of testing. Have places the engineers paperwork for my car and the results of lane change test etc into the local Motor Vehicle Registery, as evidence of it being engineered. Incase of lost paperwork and what not. Currently trying to find contacts within NT's TAC approval area to see who is the right people to approach for these kits. If that is the case previously mentioned on posts, are people getting the kits engineered? or swapping things out for rego.

Personally I think the fabricated parts are of good enough quality to pass any engineering test.

And i reckon if you had the blue bits powdercoated black, the authorities wouldn't even know :?

Squik managed to get the X-90 approved with the heim joint fitted & I think it's Gizzy off here who has got the full kit approved in Victoria.

Mine went through regency to clear a canary with the control arms & diff drop brackets in the front.... Yes all the blue bits are black on mine & they didn't pick them up as being aftermarket.

Atari4x4 you are correct squik did get oscar passed with the 3" cal kit. there were big problems though and much mods had to be done to make the springs actually fit properly... without that bending going on........ but as for in NSW registered they don't want anything to do with it apart from the fact it's regestered in the past so it'll pass now..... weird i thought but meh!!!

You are in NT. You could probably get a pine chassis engineered up there

I think there might be

The chassis is mostly aluminium, but the cockpit frame is CNC cut hardwood

Hi Guys.. sorry about the late reply.
Mines fully Engineared in Victoria.
All i need to do was take it in with the total lift not exceeding 100mm and carrying about 400Kg of ballast. Needed more to get low enough though.
The only mod was a rear swaybar. Got a custom one done through pedders.
That then got me through all tests.
Best part was when i took the ballast out it lifted back up to full height.

Also need a weigh bridge certificate so the opposite there, stripped it out and left the spare at home.
Kept the 4 seat capacity that way.

Otherwise the full 3 inch Calmini kit and custom 3 inch body lift approved with 235/75/15 wheels.

What's the chance of a similar Calmini modified vehicle getting passed the RTA now without any dramas? Low I guess.

X2. This is so far from my experience of the requirements to cert a clmini kit that it sounds like another country, let alone the same state.

I won't comment more on the quality/legality of the work of your engineer but you have made your cert null and void because the way you drive the car on the road is not how it was inspected/passed. I'm surprised you didn't just put the stock springs back in for the cert - it's what I would have done.

I got my car Blue Slipped and rego'd (NSW) with the Cal kit fitted - got an eng cert for the previous lifted springs/shocks and 31s, but not the Cal arms etc. They're rattle canned black, but some blue showing through chips and scrapes. Mechanic didn't look twice, no questions asked.

Really gotta get that eng cert updated, but brakes and seats to do first.
