Hey fellas,
Considering a 1lt Sierra. What are they like? I can't find much about them.
Top speed?
Reliability?
Torque?
How easy is it to swap to a 1.3? Even a 1.6?

getting a bit old and best left for the die hards that want to restore them
by the time you buy one and convert it you may as well buy a widetrack with it all already
theya re great, if you are prepared to baby and maintain an old car, how are you at setting points

you could always use 1.3 electronic ignition on one

1 litres are a great motor, very simple to work on. they are getting a bit old and finding one that doesn't blow smoke is usually hard, but a VRS kit has that all sorted and the motor running sweet.
the biggest downside is the 4 speed box they are bolted to. they're reliable enough, but not having a 5th gear means the motor has to work hard on the highway. I wouldn't consider doing an engine swap on mine, if the motor dies i'll rebuild it or get a replacement.
Royce mentioned babying them....... hahahahaha, I give mine a thrashing constantly and it still goes hard (for a 1 litre)
My zook is a LWB, which are more common in 1 litre then 1.3. if I were buying a SWB sierra and doing any amount of road/highway use I would get a 1.3.

you can put a 1.3 dizzy into a 1 litre to do away with points. but really, points aren't that bad, I've had no trouble with mine.
I got something better then points from a 1 litre maruti, I got a 1 litre 5 speed gearbox!!!

I don't think the problem is the lack of an overdrive - I don't think a 1.0 could pull an overdrive on the highway anyway. The bigger problem is the 3.0:1 first gear in the 1.0 gearbox and the tiny clutch.
My 660 gearbox has the tiny clutch but has a 3.6:1 first gear (and a 5th)
I quite like the 1.0 - they're a better motor than the 1.3 - but they are getting too old and the other issues with the 1.0 car (crap heater/ventilation, crap body mounts etc) are also hassles.
Go for a 1.3.
Steve.
PS I had issues getting the advance to work properly using a 1.3 dizzy on a 1.0. Idled great and took full power fine, but off idle was appalling.

I can hold 5th gear everywhere I can 'maintain speed' in 4th gear so its suprisingly good. The lack of overdrive is an issue because the motor revs so high trying to do 100km/h in 4th gear, which is what kills valve stem seals etc... the constant high revs.
I never had any problems with my clutch, have never repalced it and the gearing was all wrong when I first got the zook (31" tyres and stock 1 litre gearing) I did have to ride the clutch a fair bit in first gear high range on slight inclines. but now i'm running 30"s with S1 transfer gears and a maruti 5 speed (which has a 1st gear ratio of 3.75:1) the gearing is perfect on road and off.
I was under the impression body mounts were the same from 1 litre to 1.3? I know bodys can be interchanged.
besides, 1 litre grill and dash are way better then anything 1.3!!!

True, it just makes it a lower maintenance vehicle; like self adjusting drums.
The 1.3 dizzy is an easy conversion (if you want to do it). bolt in; remove ballast resistor and replace coil with the 12V one. Hook up the 2 wires for the dizzy to the coil. Hook up vacuum advance to mysterious fitting on intake manifold. If your concerned, get a copy of a 1.3 wiring diagram, and replicate the relevant bits on your F10.
My engine had been sitting in a paddock in a very very very neglected LJ81 for the past 15 years or so. All I did was clean it, give it an oil change, new plugs, new leads, 1.3 dizzy, new crank and cam seals. The engine has ran incredibly well since, short of carburettor and fuel pump issues. The engine is idiotic, it should be a POS with the life its had, but it isn't, its great, does not blow smoke, revs almost until the tacho runs out of numbers (runs out at 9k), and cruises on the highway for hours on end at around 6000rpm, seemingly happy. If it blew up next week, I would not hesitate in sourcing another F10 or rebuilding the current one.
I love my F10, just wish it was fuel injected
As for the whole SJ410 vs SJ413 thing, if I was to start again with a Sierra, I would probably go for the 410, smaller diffs, narrow track, cheaper etc etc, I don't see the sense in the 413's when I'd never keep a G13 anyway...

Got a pic of this fitting??
The vacc hose for advance should be just on the filter side of the butterfly, otherwise it's advancing constantly..

here you go:
I never really thought about it when I did it, the fitting I used was hooked up to a vacuum economy gauge in the donor vehicle, so I figured it would be good enough for the vac advance for the dizzy.
I can't remember where they go on the G13 anymore....

For sure, but wouldn't the variance in vacuum be what works the advance? (like the mechanism wouldn't start to advance until the vacuum got rather high?) either way the engine runs well.....

Jas said he used the Lt adv mech in the 1.3 dizzy..
By all account's the mechanical advance should be enough for the lil thing, may pay to put a light on it & see how far & quickly it's advancing, if to slow i can change the advance curve a lil..
If that's the charcoal canister port it wouldn't be drawing in idle, it would start just after the transition of off idle..

or just get a maruti electrinic dizzy and bolt it straight in.
to say a 1.3 motor is worse than a 1 litre is utter rubbish.

Guess it depends on your opinion of better....
I could never get my G13 to run as smooth as my F10 does. I can put a drink on the F10 on idle, the G13 always ran rougher. The F10 revs more also...
But the G13 slaughters the F10 for torque
